Empress Who r ought Like A Man HI I lttV u MPEROR CHIUAI of Japan, in 200 A. DM climbed to the summit of a lofty mountain and looked westward tor a land which the gods had told his empress in prayer was richer and greater than the country her husband hus-band sought to conquer. The emperor em-peror saw no such land, failed to heed the gods advice, and so the deities wrought revenge by having hav-ing him killed in battle, when subjects sub-jects rose against him. To avenge her husband's death, the Empress Jingo took command of the army, defeated the rebel enemy and then laid plans to conquer con-quer the promised land which the gods 'had revealed to her. She or dered ships to be 'built, a large, army to be recruited, and the foK lowing year all was ready for the conquest. fen H v KL&VMa. In man's uniform, the Empress Jingo led her army across the Japanese Sea to Korea. She was about to give birth to a child, but the gods decreed that the birth be delayed until after the new land was conquered. With the sun, the stars and the birds as their guides, the valiant Japanese landed in Korea, conquered the land and made Japan an empire. Oh her return the empress gave birth to a son, Ojim, and dedicated dedicat-ed him to the spirit of war. Thus has "Jingo'' to this day been allied al-lied with imperialism, and in the same spirit has Ojim been deified in Japan as the god of war. In shrines throughout Japan he is worshiped, especially by soldiers. As for Jingo, her memory is retained re-tained on stamps issued by Japan in 1908 and 1925. m& I ere? 1 5? ii V am |
