Revision of the slate became necessary when Midvale was admitted into the circuit last Tuesday, rounding out a six-team league instead of the original five. Midvale will open it schedule at Magna today against the 1936 champions, Magna-Garf ield. Other games today find Provo playing host to Gemmell clubhand Pinney Pin-ney traveling to Bingham to play U. BY LA VEKL CHRISTEN S EN A well-earned three set victory by the veteran doubles team of George Stoddard and Kirk Stephens Steph-ens after each school had won three matches gave Brigham, Young university a -3 triumph over the University of Utah ten-is ten-is champions on the "Y" courts Friday. It was a close but sufficient victory for the Cougars, who settled set-tled the score on Utah for a 5-2 setback at Salt Lake City two weeks ago. Results: Singles Dick Bennion, U, defeated de-feated Malcolm Booth, Y. 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; George Stoddard. Y. defeated defeat-ed Marvin Betnun, U, 6-2, 6-2; Dan Freed, U. defeated Bill Par-doe, Par-doe, Y. 10-8, 6-1; Kirk Stephens. Y, defeated Gene Eardley, U; 6- 2 5-7, 8-6. Besides their brilliant performance perfor-mance in winning the deciding issue, Stoddard and Stephens were further instrumental in winning the match by turning in -singles victories. The fourth Cougar triumph tri-umph came when Captain Snow and Charles Fletcher out-stroked Jack Benson and Purdie Daines of Utah in the No. 3 doubles encounter. I tah Takes Lead Utah stepped into the lead ns the match opened when Dick Een-nion Een-nion took the measure of Malcolm Mal-colm Booth, 6-2, 3-6. 6-2. Booth didn't get p-oing until the second set, when he wa at his height. His powerful left-handed strokes had Bennion befuddled jnaaiy times. When Bennion charged the net. Booth's low passing shots fooled him; when the Ute ace chose to stand back and drive, he was outmatched. However, Bennion came bad: in the third set, and took advantage advan-tage of a slump by Booth. He won 6 straight games to clinch the victory. Stoddard knotted the .score by "Y" High, Provo Tennis Winners B. Y. high and Provo shared honors in the annual Region 3 tennis tournaments staged at the "Y" court Friday. Paul Harmon. "Y" high singles ace. gained the top place by turning turn-ing back Merlin Slack of Provo. state singles champion last year, in a terrific battle in the finals. The scores were 7-5, 6-4. Jack Thurgood and Alfred Alder Al-der of Provo, who won the state doubles title in 1936 captured Region 3 honors by defeating ! Lehi team of Keith Trane and Chase Allied, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals. All finalist teams are qualified for the state tournament May 15 at Provo. Thus, both the singles sing-les and doubles champions of 1936 will be back to defend their titles. Bill Pardoe, playing with a bad cut across the palm of his hand, rXiilt up a 5-2 lead on Dan Freed of Utah, but the latter staged a desperate rally, tied, the score at 5-all, then went on to chalk up a 10-8 victory in the first set. He kept up his rally in the second sec-ond set, winning 6-1. Tied At Three All While Stephens was tussling with Gene Eardley of Utah. Snow and Fletcher finished their doubles doub-les match, tying the score at 2-all 2-all again. Stephens and Eardley had a long, hard-fought combat which the "Y" player won only after knuckling down to his very best tennis. He won the first set 6-2, and built up a 4-1 lead in the second. Eardley-took advantage advan-tage of Stephens' coWapse in form and captured the set, 5-7. The third set wag a near-replica of the second, but Stephens recovered recov-ered in the deuce games to eke out an 8-6 victory. This gave B. Y. U. a momentary lead, but it was wiped out when Bennion and Hardy overcame Booth and Pardoe, 8-6. 7-5. There was little to choose between the two teams, but Utah seemingly had the greater great-er punch in the pinches. Deciding Ma ten The deciding match was closely-fought, but both teams were tense and over-cautious. Alter and Freed gained a 3-1 lead a th" first set opened, and maintained it throughout the set. The second set saw Stoddard and Stephens break Alters service twice and Freed's once before winning 6-2. Stoddard and Freed won their services as the deciding set opened. open-ed. Utah broke through Stephens' Steph-ens' service. Alter's overhead game collapsed in the next game, and his service went to the Cougars. Coug-ars. The next throe garner were won by B. Y. U. Thev were featured fea-tured by brilliant kills at the net by Stephens, and seemingly impossible recoveries by Stoddard. Stod-dard. Utah started a belated rally. Alter won his service. anl the Utes broke through Stoddard's. With the tying game coming up, Stoddard and Stephens put on the pressure and won a love game on Freed's service, clinching clinch-ing the victory and match. Utah still has a league game yet to play with Utah State. SMITH'S 89 WEST CENTER Springville Takes Second; Ellsworth, Conder Brilliant Conder of Lincoln Cuts Close to State Record Time in 440; Pleasant Grove Mile Relay Team Beats Favored Bulldog Runners For the sixth consecutive year Coach Glen Simmons' Provo high Bulldogs walked off with the lion's share of the points in the annual Region 3 track and field meet held at the "Y" stadium Friday Scoring four firsts, tying for another, and garnering numerous numer-ous points on seconds and thirds, the Bulldogs amassed 65 points, almost doubling their nearest opponent. Springville nosed out Pavson in a brilliant duel for second, sec-ond, their scores being 37 V4 to 37. respectively. Lincoln was a close fourth with 33, while American Am-erican Fork was next in line with 2S. The other contesting teams finished a follows: Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove 19, Nephi 6, Lehi 5, Spanish Fork 5, and Tintic 1. Performances throughout the meet were splendid, but- only one Region 3 record fell by the wayside. way-side. This was in the 440. Jack Conder, Lincoln's ace speedster, stepped the distance in :50.9. The former record of :51.4 was held jointly bv Lyndon Dud?ey of Spanish Fork and Dick Wight-man Wight-man of Soringville. Cyrus Ellsworth of Payson was the only double winner. However, his performances in the 100 and 220 were mediocre. There was no real competition for him as there was last year when Clyde Boyle was running for Provo. Ellsworth High Man Ellsworth was high-point man of the meet. His firsts, a second in the broad jump, and 14 points gleaned in the 880 relay gave him a total of 15'4 tallies. Erie Boorman Boor-man of Springville was second with 131-, while Don Breinholt came in for third with 12. Boorman Boor-man won the high hurdles, tied for first in the high jump, and took second in the low hurdles. Breinholt's pointage was amassed amass-ed via seconds in the pole vault, shotput, and javelin. Feature race of the day was the mile relay in which Pleasant Grove's crack team nosed out Provo. It was a close race throughout, with Provo holding a slight lead most of the time. Nielson of Pleasant Grove passed Dick Pope by less than a foot at the tape. Henry Bourne, Provo's 880 star, won his race by 50 yards in the excellent time of. 2:01.4. Near-record Near-record performances were turned in in the hurdles events. Boorman ran the highs in :15.8, while Cherrington topped the lows in :24. Provo won the medley relay in just a fraction of a second above the regional record, and Payson cut iust as close to the 880 relay standard. Prize Beef Is Sold at Auction SPANISH FORK Brisk bidding bid-ding marked the auction sale of fat and prize winning animals Thursday afternoon, the closing event at the Livestock coliseum of the Thirteenth State Junior Livestock show at Spanish Fork. The highest price paid, was by the Rottisserie Inn Salt Lake City, to Mark Hansen for his champion fat lamb, 50 cents per pound, being paid. The grandchampion fat beef of the show, owned by Bill Roach, was purchased by R. L. Jex, local merchant for 35 cents per pound. The grand champion fat hog of the show owned by Junior Lundell was purchased by the American Pack of Salt Lake for 21 cents per pound. This was the final event of the Livestock show except for dances held at the Edgewater and Arrowhead Arrow-head resort in the evening. A large crowd attended the auction sales and C. E. Walters of Flier, Idaho was the auctioneer. John E. Booth and R. L. Jex were the chairmen of this feature. DRAWS JAIL TERM Albert Shillings was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail . when he pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication in-toxication in city court Saturday. Satur-day.
