Hoyt Walter Scott GOME TO GHURGH SUNDAY ; ; ; ; ; r ; s Temperance y' By Harlowe R. Hoyt ' " "' " ' ' ' " " M , -, ,,, During the forty days that followed his resurrection, resurrec-tion, Jesus appeared frequently to his disciples, singly and in groups. On each occasion, he instructed in-structed them in their future labors, detailing the nature and destiny of his church, and what they should do in order to develop and establish it for the centuries to come. On his fortieth day following, his resurrection, Jesus foregathered with his disciples for the last time. Among other things, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem for- a few days. They were to remain in the city until the Holy Ghost proved itself, , after which they were, tojireach his gospel through the world and to all nations. After the ascension, the apostles remembered ths message which had been given to them. They re turned to the room of the last supper, where at times as many as one hundred and twenty people were assembled. There they prayed and meditated, awaiting the coming of "the spirit which has been promised them by Jesus in his last message. m For ten days the group remained there. Then cam Pentecost and with itsihe demonstration of th fiery flames and theglft of tongues. In the meantime, mean-time, Peter proposed that someone should be chosen to succeed Judas Iscariot, who had hanged himself afterhls betrayal of Christ. Lots were cast and Matthias, one of the disciples, was chosen. ;:nsmintw PAX QUALITY FEEDS C. Sterling Cluff, Mgr. V. It was in these words that Jesus of fazareth invoked his plea to his .heavenly father a plea to be de- ivered safely from all evil. It was not Christ's idea that we are to travel through life freed from temptations temp-tations of all sorts. That would be a confession of weakness. Character Charac-ter is forged in the hot fire of temptation. temp-tation. It is strengthened each time evil is repulsekJV Jesus knew this. Had he not withstood the temptations of every kind of worldliness during the forty days and forty night he fasted fast-ed and prayed in the wilderness? Had he not been tempted, time rnd again, by those who sough, miraculous demonstrations as proof of his divine power? Even his nearest near-est followers tempted him to declare de-clare himself a worldly ruler cor.ie to rescue Judeas from the impositions imposi-tions of its Roman conquerors. He knew, only too well, how temptations heaped upon one and what strength ot character and definiteness of purpose must be brought to repulse them. One ofthe greatest accomplishments accomplish-ments of life is to learn when to say "No." Few people attain "it. JLearn to say it. Be not Jteterred by what others think, by scornful remarks re-marks or jealous importunities. Let not the bonds of friendship or love, nor the selfish pleas for accommodation, accommo-dation, alter your decision. Once you have' decided that a thing is wrong once you. have weighed it and found it bad say 'No" and stick to it. Often the Individual placed in' a position where he may be invited" to do something not exactly wrong according to strict moral standard but which does -not coincide wita his conception of right. To refuib may mean opening himself to cnti- ' cism or ridicule. Often it may mean the termination of friendship. But the person of character does uot waver. . " ' Gird on the armor of righteousness, righteous-ness, piesent a firm front to evil, and temptation loses its threat. (Copyright, 1931, Publishers Syndicate). Two if by land anidi one if by sea, And I on the opposite shore will be, Ready to ride and give the alarm To every middlesex, village and farm. Then he said goodnight; and with muffled oar Silently ' rowei to the Charlestown shore." So did Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Long-fellow record one of. the historio happenings of early Revolutionary days in which, Old North Church played its part. It stand3 today on Salem street as it did when Revere made his. rtcte to arouse the embattled farmer into first open conflict with )the British redcoats, but the . name, placed in front of the building, is Chiesa dal Cristo. This has been done to attract the neighborhood dwellers, for the community has become Latin in its complexion. But still it remainsf the Church of Christ, oldest of all the churches or isosion. Since 723, North Church has stood on this slope of Copp's Hill. Its interior, fair and white, plastered plas-tered and panelled! xis atmospheric cjfearly days.
