Veritable Mountains of Ice Piled High by the Mighty Hand of the Wind on Lake Utah as the Greatest Spring House-Cleaning in the State Takes Place Did You Ever See Such Reflections ? The Words of the Poet Here Have Their Fullest Meaning, on a Gorgeous Lake Rimmed 'Round With Snow-White Mountains That Was a Day! ui: mm 7 HARRISON R. MERRILL, B. Y. U. , , (Photos by W. P. Cottam.) AARCHwild winds and Lake Utah together sound the 1V1 drums of spring as they are sounded by few natural agencies in these valleys; but both are nonchalant. That is, they care little whether mere human beings are present to see the spectacle of nearly four hundred square miles of ice suddenly become animate or not. They don't seem to care a rap whether anybody is present to report the greatest spring house-cleaning that takes place in Utah. Elmer Smith, a lover of the lake, this year decided to take up the vigil and see the ice break up and come into shore like great blunt blades cutting all before them. Elmer has followed the water fowl along the shores and across the sun-streaked, sun-streaked, rain-swept body of water enough to know by the A i 1 V They Are Not Arctic Explorers I 'Dangerous?' He, knew the time was ripe for the spring cleaning. clean-ing. The four hundred square miles of ice lay before him like a carpet of heaven with-! out a sign of movement. The wind was cold, bitter, in fact. Smith retreated to wait awrhile for more wind. He took shelter in a house boat in the mouth of Provo river where he kept himself him-self warm for two hours. Then once more he sought the shore. Where one-hundred and twenty twen-ty minutes before there had been miles of spotless ice there were now miles of almost spotless water, wa-ter, and along the shore to right and to left of him were huge ice mountains heaped up by the March winds almost in a twinkling. twin-kling. Tffe following day,- after the wind had passed, Smith launched his speed boat, "Smithie," and armed with cameras and accompanied accom-panied by friends he explored the few icebergs which still remained afloat on the inland sea and roamed the shores suddenly transformed into arctic' wastes. Now It Happened. Now it happened that as I coasted along Center street in Provo on a sunny morning, I was hailed by one of these navigators, naviga-tors, who, armed with his camera cam-era kill, told me of the wanders of our own region and suggested that I, too, should go and see, and "shoot!" I was all eagerness, but I had to postpone my trip until press- N t i v it ing duties allowed me to go free. 1 solicited the company of Dr. Walte.r P.
