Carlson, Idaho Falls police chief, said today that sugar beet growers had been unwittingly unwitting-ly raising marijuana in this area for the last 10 years. Carlson said transient laborers, carrying the green seeds with them in the spring, sowed them on plots of ground, carrying no other crop, returning to reap the crop when matured. He said a Mexican laborer at Fort Hall had. planted an entire acre two years ago, and that dope users had helped him harvest the rattan-like fiber. "Laborers seem to make a special spe-cial effort to gain a return job with the owner of land where they have planted the drug," Carlson said.
