Tney must be alert to distinguish between quality merchandise bargain sales and advertised bargain sales. Some of the guide posts for intelligent in-telligent shoppers to inquire about and look for when buying cotton materials, Miss Agren points out, are: 1. Color fastness to tub and sun. 2. Thread count. This is the number num-ber of filling and warp threads to the square inch. Generally the more equal the thread count the more evenly the fabric will wear. Good quality percale has a thread count of 80 threads in the warp and 80 in the filling or woof. Fabrics made with low thread count usually have sizing present to cover up poor quality. 3. Quality of cotton and cotton yarn. Good quality cotton yarn is well twisted and even. Hold a fabric up to a strong light and look at the threads and evenness of the fabric structure. This will tell a real story of the quality of a fabric. . 4. Tensile strength. This means the number of pounds pull the warp and filling threads will stand before they break. Tensile strength gives a valuable index to the wearing wear-ing quality of a fabric. 5. Shrinkage is an important factor and one which every consumer con-sumer should inquire about. There are materials on the market that are fully shrunk. There is no logical logi-cal reason why percentage shrinkage shrink-age per yard should not accompany ac-company every bolt of material on the market. 6. Read labels and information given on the ends of the bolt boards. Intelligent, persistent, inquisitive inquisi-tive consumers can do much toward to-ward procuring informative labeling label-ing of goods. DIRECTOR APPEALS FOR OPINIONS ON POPLARS By Director William Peterson, USAC Extension Service Early in the settlement of Utah some one with an artistic taste and a love for trees was influential in the planting of lombardy poplars. pop-lars. Some of these trees have decorated almost every farmstead in the state and many of the city lots within the towns. One author in his visit to Utah more than 30 years ago stated that no more beautiful scene could be found out of floors than that of a Utah farmstead with its high rugged mountain background, well placed buildings, and towering lombardy poplars reaching above the common vegetation and pointing point-ing their tops toward the heavenly blue sky. It seems to be a common admiration admir-ation for the people who visit Utah only occasionally, to speak of the beauty which the lombardy poplar has added to the farmstead in the mountain valleys. That beauty still remains. , The life of the tree however is only from 35 to 40 years. Many of the trees have already reached, in age, their expected normal life. The trees are dying, some from disease or drouth but most of them, because they have lived their regular life cycle. It is the exception excep-tion to find a row of lombardy poplars today that does not show "stag top" in which a part of the top of the tree has died. It has grown ragged and is disintegrated. Because these trees have lived Key 8 Made - Gun Repairing Does Your Gun Conform to the New Federal Law? SEE US OSCAR CARLSON Sporting Goods Co. 112 NO. UNIV. AVE. OFF. tO-ZH their life cycle the artistic beauty of tree planting in the state is facing a dilemma. Very few of these trees have been planted in recent years and if the same procedure pro-cedure should continue for another two decades very few lombardy poplars will remain. I do not believe there are many citizens in Utah who would like to see this tree eliminated. They have been topped, "dutch" cropped, and mamed in every conceivable fashion fash-ion to allow space for electric wires, etc. But the lombardy poplar pop-lar with its high towering beauty still commands a place in the Utah landscape. The tree is not espev.ally valu- ; able for its timber, ilut it has made Utah distinctive. This species is threatened with elimination unless un-less new plantings of lombardy poplars are made. Do we want this tree to continue? It is hoped that the people of Utah will make some expression of opinion. ROOSTER STARTS FOUL. PLAY FORT WAYNE, Ind. C, Oct 23 (UP) Back in the United States after a three weeks sea vacation that took him 3,000 miles through Atlantic and Pacific waters, President Presi-dent Roosevelt disembarked at this port today where he will make a speech and leave for Washington. Wash-ington. Burned a deep brown by the tropic sun, the chief executive was a picture of health when he stepped out on the quarter deck of the cruiser Houston, his floating float-ing White House, to say good-bye to the officers and crew. Mr. Roosevelt will make his speech at the Citadel, a military school. While his subject was not disclosed, it was assumed he would confine himself to matters of domestic do-mestic interest. Observers thought he would want the opportunity to scan the world situation with state department officials before commenting, if at all, on international interna-tional affairs. Swallows Defy Elements to Keep Traditional Date SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif., Oct. 24 (U.hi - The historic swallows of famous San Juan Capistrano today defied the elements ele-ments and departed for the south on schedule as they have done every October 23 for 68 years. A dust-laden gale was blowing as the swallows took off. An added add-ed handicap was heavy smoke from southern California's disastrous dis-astrous brush and forest fires. Villagers who gathered to watcli the departure said it was impossible to see 10 feet in any direction, in fact, it was impossible to note the time of the annual departure. Not until a villager climbed to the loft of the ancient mission did it become be-come known that the flight had taken place. The fathers of the mission know exactly when the swallows will return. They always leave on October Oc-tober 23 and come back on March 19. CHERRY TREE IN BL0O31 WARSAW, Ind.
