Dismounts are an important and necessary skill for the bull and bronc rider and some pro rodeo cowboys perform per-form real colorful exits from their horses when the ride has been completed. com-pleted. However, one cowboy's dismount dis-mount placed him fairly close to the horse's feet and some of the fans remarked, "He better work on that or he's going to get hurt." The sport of rodeo is a fun activity, but there is also a serious side to the riding, roping, wrestling and racing sport. It's exciting for the cowboy, who rides the bulls and broncs and also a thrill for the fans who watch the riding action, but the cowboy has two major goals and that is to gain a successful suc-cessful ride and not get injured. Sometimes the cowboy reaches his number one goal due to a good score on his horse and then it is time to achieve the number two goal and probably pro-bably the most important item is not getting hurt. One cowboy, Jake Bullard, Henry Mountains, came pretty pret-ty close to not achieving goal number two as he was ejected by his bull, had a tough time getting on his feet and had the bull coming closer and closer to him. However, the cowboy kept from being hurt as the cowboy's Vernal cowgirl, Marcie McNeill, was the all-around cowgirl in the Uintah Basin High School Rodeo. She placed first in goat tying and girls' cow cutting cut-ting and came real close in gaining another first place title. Lori Childs of the Spikers edged Marcie McNeill for first place in the barrel race, 18.131 to 18.133. An auction was held at the Uintah Basin High School Rodeo to raise funds for the local club. Strawberry and raisin pies were auctioned off. The pies looked good, but once the $5 figure was surpassed I decided to keep my hands in my pockets. All of a sudden sud-den my mustache started to itch, but I decided that I couldn't afford a $20 pie even though it was a good cause. One cowboy had his hand in the air and he was asked if he was making a bid. He said, "No" and quickly put his hands together. THE HORSE WINS the saddle bronc riding event as Troy Blackburn of Henry Mountain bites the dust at the Uintah Basin High School Rodeo.
