LaurelsAnd the Work Of Incoming City Leaders By DOROTHY O. REA Charming wives share the laurels of their husbands as the social spotlight swings this week to incoming city officials offi-cials who will take office Jan. 2, 1950. Mayor-elect C. W. (Bill) Love and Frank T. Gardner, recently elected commissioner, look to the capabilities of their wives to aid them in the tasks ahead. Bill Love came to Provo as a BYU freshman, little dreaming that here he would take a wife, make a home and eventually become "the first gentleman of the town." The college sweetheart, who is now Mrs. Love, was pretty Flora Newell, daughter of Myron and Alice Smoot Newell Bill lived with his parents in Provo, comin'g from Nephi where he spent his boyhood. He was born there, a son of Charles William Wil-liam and Sarah Jane Evans Love. He left Provo for a few years to become a rancher "and manager man-ager of a livestock company in Nevada. It was there that he developed de-veloped the hobbies of hunting and riding horseback, which he still loves to do. He was, at one time, president of the Rotary club in St George where he was in business, also serving as president of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah. In Provo he is active in BPO Elks and is vice president of Rotary club. He is a broker by profession. The Love Family Mrs. Love fashions fine pieces of handwork and at present is engaged in making snuggly winter win-ter clothing for the grandchildren, grandchil-dren, which now .number four. There are three sons In the Love family: Raymond Newell Love, Richfield; William Smoot, who will graduate next spring from Stanford university with a degree in law; Charles Ralph Love, who lives at the family home in Provo. Also at the Love home is little Grandmother Alice Smoot Newell, New-ell, mother of Mrs. Love. Mrs. Newell will be 00 years old in February and is known and loved by all who have lived long in Provo. Mrs. Love is a charter member of Nelke Reading club, named for Miriam Nelke, who once taught school in Provo. Mrs. Love is president of the ladies auxiliary to the state real estate organization. organiza-tion. She is also a member of the LDS Relief Society. - ' Meet the Gardners . - Mrs. Frank T. Gardner has been, on a merry-go-round of activity ac-tivity ever since the day she changed her name from Ada Hickman. She has carried out the thousand-an-one duties of being a bishop's wife for the past five years besides assisting as an auxiliary member in the American Ameri-can Legion, where Mr. Gardner has served as commander of Provo Post 13 as well as in the capacity of district Legion commander. Ever active in civic and church circles, Mrs. Gardner has also carried on the management of the greatest of all institutions the home. Five children have added their personalities to the inter esting picture of the Gardner scene. Dick Gardner, the youngest son is the only one of the Gardner Gard-ner children left at home. Married sons and daughters Include: Frank H. Gardner, Mrs.- Adene G. Houtz, Provo; .Mrs. Helen G. Goold, Ft. Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Marjorie G. Fults, Altamont, Tenn. There are seven grandchildren. grand-children. Incoming Commissioner Frank T. Gardner is a native of Central Utah, being born in American Fork, a son of James T. and Sarah Jane Hill Gardner. Mrs. Gardner Gard-ner was orphaned at an early age losing her parents, George H. and Emma Homer Hickman. Civic Leader Among other important posts, Mr. Gardner has served as vice president of Provo Rotary club and as a director in Provo Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. He was a lieutenant lieu-tenant in the army during World War I. Mrs. Gardner is active in LDS activities and is past president presi-dent of Acacia, club. Many good books are to be found in the Gardner home where the famUy enjoys reading in leisure lei-sure hours. Fishing and hunting are the favored hobbies that Mr. Gardner will pursue, "sometime when there are more hours in the day." Timpano&os Archers Elect Officers At Annual Banquet Election' of new officers and outlining of program plans for the coming year occupied members of the Timpanogos Archers association who met Friday evening at a local cafe for the annual banquet and business meeting. Out-going president, Clark White, presided. New officers of-ficers elected include: Norm Whittaker, president; Ken Harris, vice president; Elton Faler, director; Herbert Chris-tensen, Chris-tensen, secretary; and Mrs. Claude Holmes, representative. Dinner was served at tables centered by yellow and white 'mums and yellow tapers. During the evening stories of deer hunting escapades were exchanged. ;v In attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Christiansen, Mr. and Mrs. Clark White, Mr. and Mrs. Lorin Muir, M?, and Mrs. Claude Holmes, Mr. Whittaker and son, Don, Mr. Harris and Don Holmes. Many bits of fine handwork created by Mrs. Love are evidenced evi-denced in the rooms where music a nd fine books play an important part. An ancient little lady of 90 years al so shares the household with the Love family. She is Alice Smoot Newell, mother of Mrs. Love. Its Fun ... .'. The Gardner Home The home of the Frank T. Gardner family is an exciting place to Ke never a dull moment. Son'. Dick (at left) is all interested in plans for Jan. 2 when his Dad will take oath as Provo city commissioner. Even the family pooch lives in a constant state of skittering hither and yon it's a tradition in the Gardner family where everyone is active in civic, school or church projects. , 4-H Honors Go o Sprin&ville Teen-Age Girl SPRINGV1LLE Word has been received from Chiceo that Joanna Johnson, daughter daugh-ter of Mrs. Zella Johnsoi. of Springville, has won 4-H honors with her taffeta formal. for-mal. Miss Johnson's homemade outfit was among 46 judged outstanding by the committee on boys and girls glee club work at the National Congress Con-gress of 4-Hers being held in conjunction with the 50th annual an-nual international livestock exposition. x The aqua rayon formal had wide collars and a gathered skirt and was worn with a short evening coat. The short coat, of wool jcuiJiqJ was cream-colored, with wide cuffs on the sleeves. .- Miss Johnson completed her outfit with an old-fashioned necklace, sandals, gloves of taffeta fabric, and a bag of Macrame embroidery. BYU Dames Hear Review "Cheaper By the Dozen," a currently popular humorous novel, nov-el, was reviewed by Mrs. Llbby Hayward Friday evening at the regular monthly meeting of BYU Dames club members in the Joseph Smith banquet hall. Mrs. Eldon Dixon played piano selections. Mrs. James Orton, president, was in charge. Refreshments were Served to the 40 members attending. . Dessert luncheon was enjoyed by those named and Mrs. Paul McAffee, Mrs. Don Sims and Mrs. Kenneth Hoopes. f k ."v New Nome SPRINGVILLE "The Modern Mothers" club has been chosen as the official name for the group of Brookside friends who have been meeting regularly for sewing sew-ing and discussions of child problems, cultural subjects, and various phases of home planning. The name was suggested by Mrs. Glen Pyper. At a meeting held this week at the home of Mrs. Richard Hag- lund, the group heard suggested outlined programs by represen tatives of the program committee including Mrs. Haglund and Mrs. Ernest Boyer. They decided on a program of self-development for the coming months to be interspersed in-terspersed with programs on other subjects. Mrs. Clarence Schriever and Mrs. Vernon Dunn will also act on the program committee com-mittee to outline the year's work. Mrs. Chester Wright, president of the group, was in charge of the meeting and conducted items of business, including plans for a Christmas party at which the members will entertain their husbands. hus-bands. AAUW Holds Annual Affair "A Century of Christmases" was theme of the annual Christmas social so-cial event enjoyed Thursday evening eve-ning in the Smith banquet hall by members and guests of American Association of University Women, Provo chapter. Mrs. Wayne B. Hales presided, Lady Elks Plan Fete Ladies of Elks will stage their annual Christmas party Dec. 7 in the Elks home, according to Mrs. Fred Paolette, president and chairman. Cards and other games will be played, and program will be presented, pre-sented, with music under direction direc-tion of Mrs. Fred Loveless and India Topic For Acacia and Vera Woodland directed the orp win give '. Christmas program which followed the theme of the meeting. Mrs. Anna Boss Hart and Mrs. Stella Oaks were readers, and musical numbers were by Mrs. Maxine P. Turley. Farrer junior high school girls sang three selections se-lections under direction of Mrs. Reta K. Stewart. Christmastime Christmas-time celebrations were reviewed in tableau form from 1849 to 1949. Recordings of the Salt Lake LDS tabernacle choir were played, and Marian Brandlev and Janelle Brimhall presented a dia logue. Georgene Krissman played violin selections, accompanied by Mrs. Turley. Climaxing the program was a Christmas wish for AAUW members, mem-bers, read by Mrs. Hales. Decorations were a Tranced bv Mrs. Ivan Sack and Mrs. Georire W. Worthen. Evergreen and red and green streamers decked the tables, where lighted red candles provided illumination, and a tiny angel marked each place. Favors were evergreen nut cues, and programs made by Vera Woodland Wood-land were given to those attending. The refreshment committ consisted of Mrs. Frank Gardner, Jr., Mrs. Sheldon Jacobson, Mrs. Eugene Faux, Mrs. LaVar Kump, Mrs. Alice Larsen, Ida Liechty and Etta Jones. story Dinner arrangements are being made by Mrs. Orlan Gagon and Mrs. LeEarl Burr, hostesses.
