October 18, 1949 SUNDAY HERALD Monument Marks First Camp Of Pioneer Springville Settlers SPRINGVILLE A . marker-of the seven Springville DUP which designates the site where the original settlers of Springville camped on their first night after arriving here, has been completed and set uo on the corner of Second West and Second North, according to Mrs. Mary L. Also participating in the "Op-i "Op-i eration Miki" is Pfc. Ned f. Wil-f Wil-f son, son of Mr. and Mrs. C F. Wilson, Lehi. He entered the t army Feb. 3, of this year, and Is presently serving with the Sec- ond Infantry division band at , Fort Lewis, Wash. , . camos. and the Mapleton camp. The idea was originated in the Spring Creek camp by Mrs. Ivy Anderson in September, 1948. She met with the city council and they passed a resolution in Octo ber, 1948 allowing the Daughters of Utah Pioneers organization to erect a suitable marker on the historic corner. During the following spring of 1949, a written authorization was obtained from Mayor Sterling E, Price and forwarded to the state central -company, of the DUP in Salt Lake City, accompanied by a letter asking - permission to erect a marker on Springville's first camp site. The central com pany granted the. request - the working of the inscription was sent in, and the plaque was re ceived early in September. After some delay, the marker was built by Willis K. Johnson, assisted by Marion Johnson and James An derson. The inscription reads: "Daughters of Utah Pioneers, , . " . NO. 140 : -. ' -", ; Erected Sept, 1949 Springville's First Camp Site 'On September 18, 1850, the first pioneers arrived In Spring ville and camped on this lot. Covered with tall grasses and supplied with plenty of spring water bordered on the east by lofty mountains and on the, west by sparkling waters of Utah lake, this location had been selected earlier by scouts for settlement, The company consisted of Capt Aaron Johnson, Myron N.- Cran dalL John W. Deal, William Mil ler, Amos S. Warren and their families: Martin P., Nelson D. and Lucian D. CrandalL and Charles Warren. "Springville and Mapleton camps; Utah Co.
