Mr. Coombs was one of the first school teachers in Payson and one of the most prominent citizens citi-zens here over a period of 22 years. Mr. Coombs was born in Illinois on March 21, 1834. His parents, Mark A and Maria Morgan Coombs had joined the L. D. S. church in 1832. He started to teach school when 17 years old and continued this vocation for 20 years. He was also active in church affairs. He came to Payson in 1861 and with his family continued his residence here until his death in 1883. He reared a large family in Payson, many of them becoming well known educators in the state. In 1869 he was called by President Brigham Young to take charge of the tithing office in Payson, a position he held for 17 years. He traveled a great deal by appointment appoint-ment instructing other tithing clerks. He held many prominent church offices in Payson and in the old Utah stake. The complete history of Mr. Coombs' life was read at the reunion re-union in Payson by his daughter, Mrs. Ida Coombs LundrThe group first met at the- cemetery to decorate the graves and then gathered at Memorial Park where luncheon was served.
