Show B4 Wednesday, December 31, 2008 Vernal Express 2008 o jtL year of sports January 23 U'ettes crowned region champs The 2007-08 Uintah High drill team hosted and won the Region 10 drill team competition on Jan.19 at Uintah High. They won the competition in front of a home crowd, finishing in first place in all three categories. The U'ettes finished first in military, dance, and novelty receiving a rank of three in each category. "I am so pleased and proud of our team's effort," said Head Coach Robin McClellan. "We executed and performed better as a whole than we have at any time this year. We seem to be peaking at the right time." Even by Head Coach Gregg Stensgard's high standards Uintah's performance at the state tournament was impressive. impres-sive. The team brought home two champions, seven finalists, and 13 placers, but still could not place any higher than third. Meanwhile, Candace Workman made history by being the first girl to make the finals. "I couldn't ask for more from these guys," said Stensgard. "They really overachieved to a point in some cases." Her ability to push the ball and make plays offensively combined with her intensity on defense made her an amazing competitor. "I don't think we really had a MVP our on team but Catlin was definitely one of our very good players," said Head Coach Sha-non Sha-non Johnson. "I've told Catlin before, 'If I ever start a business, you'd be one of the first people I would hire'. That's because she is a people person. She gives it everything she has while she is there and even when no one is around. She makes other people around her better. She's smart and highly productive. The boys did so with a score of 135 and the girls recorded a score of 105. The day was good one for qualifying times as four individuals and one team from Uintah qualified. The boys' and girls' teams had a total of 30 individuals in-dividuals place in the top 10 and five of their team events place in the top five. Head Coach Richard Henderson Hender-son said he was impressed by his team's success and hopes it will carry over as the prepare for state competition. May 21 Uintah's playoff run ends After starting the three-day tournament with a 5-3 win over Emery things seemed to be destined des-tined to end nicely for Uintah's softball team. However, the second day changed the script as Uintah went down 7-0 to to Bear River, the eventual state champions. The bad taste didn't end there as the Utes then lost their second game of the day to Juan Diego 8-1. The two losses ended Uintah's hopes of making the finals. Uintah's playoff conquest had nearly ended in their second sec-ond round game against Emery when the team gave up a two-run lead. However, Taylor Craven hit a game-winning home run with one base runner on. The hit would prove to be the game winner for Uintah. Craven also recorded a double in the game, mmjiw 1 m n 1 r Three Vernal girls soccer teams headed to Cedar City last week co compete in the yearly Utah Summer Games. In their first game against the Wasatch Lightning the Vernal Force lost 6-0. In the second game, against the Cougars, the Force pulled out a win with a score of 4-0, followed by a loss to the Logan Lynx with a score of 1-0. Entering into the bronze medal game, they beat the Dixie Dragons, 2-0, winning the Force a bronze medal. Ithe young Vernal Attitude also brought home a bronze medal by defeating the Rush South 99 among others. July 16 Vernal 9-year-olds win state All Star tournament The Vernal 9-year-old All-Star team beat out the competition at the state All-Star tournament tourna-ment and will now advance to the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament. There will be a total of 16 teams in the tournament tourna-ment coming from from California, Guam, Arizona, Hawaii, Utah and Nevada. Ne-vada. On July 29 the Vernal 9's will play the team from northern California. And on July 30 Vernal will play the team from southern California. On July 31 they face central California team, to round out a tripod of California teams against one lone Utah team. If the Vernal 9's finish first in their pool they then will advance to a double elimination tournament Aug, 1 to 4. August 13 Uintah wrestlers survive J Robinsons Three Uintah wrestlers - Hunter Murray, Matt Sunkees, and TJ Hiatt - attended and passed the J Robinsons High Intensity Wrestling Camp in Minnesota, a camp that is compared com-pared to a 28 day military boot camp. Attendees of the camp ex plained that the camp is very high intensity, beginning with morning runs, followed by two intense wrestling sessions, followed fol-lowed again by additional running, run-ning, lifting, and reviews. In addition to receiving a passing(positive) score, graduates gradu-ates must complete a 15 mile marathon. "Passing is very hard to do," stated Uintah wrestling coach Gregg Stensgard. "Intheendyou find out that you can get through almost anything if you put you mind to it," he added. September 17 Utes win third in a row at homecoming home-coming The Uintah Utes football team is on a roll, with their third straight win coming at Friday night's homecoming game against the Ogden Tigers. Utes hockey still undefeated Add one more weekend win By Gary Parker Express Writer The Uintah Utes hockey team traveled to Salt Lake City last weekend for a 4-0 win against Lone Peak at the Olympic Ice Oval in Kearns, Utah, leaving the Utes undefeated for the season. A strong Utes team scored two goals within four minutes of opening play, taking their opponents oppo-nents by storm. Utes skaters Lars Carlson and Nimish Chaudhari took the first two goals, assisted by Tyler Larsen, Kegon Chivers and Bowdie Stubbs. Utes teammate Ben Warren slapped another shot in for a third goal with 3:54 left in the period, again assisted by Bowdie Stubbs. The two teams met head to head, keeping scoring to zero during the second period, as the embattled Lone Peak team struggled to keep the Utes at bay. As the third period began, the Lone Peak team kicked up its game in a vain attempt to keep from being shutout, but was turned away by Utes goalie Kyler Bowden who deflected all 12 Lone Peak attempts during the game. Toward the end of the third and final period the Utes rallied and Utes skater Sage McNeil, with help from Tyler Larsen, scored one more goal to win the game 4-0, Utes. The Utes have eight wins, no ties and no losses for the season. The Utes Junior Varsity hockey team also added another win to its belt in a 3-2 victory over Murray. Kyler Bowden, Kegon Chivers, and Andrew Shiozaki, all scored goals during a game that leaves the JV team with two wins, two ties, and three losses for the season. The Utes play again on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. (Alumni), 8:15 p.m. (Varsity), and 9:45 p.m. (JV), then again on Jan. 2 at 1 1 : 15 a.m. (Varsity) and 12:45 p.m. (JV).
