Uintah High School uses the mountain camp as an opportunity to build team unity. tain camp last week. The seniors were there from Monday through Friday, while other players were there from Tuesday through Friday. What is it that the team does at the mountain camp? Well, the answer is simple enough. To start with they do a lot of conditioning to get in shape for the upcoming, looming high school football season. They do a lot of running. But, it's not all running. When they get up there they divide into teams that include all different ages of players from freshman to senior. The different age players get to know each other and learn how to play with each other in the mountain camp environment. They do a lot of different competitive drills while they are up there to test the competitive spirit of the group. They do everything from balancing on logs to racing through obstacle courses that they set up. . "Our focus is unity, and getting get-ting the kids to know each other, " explained Coach Doug Harding. They do this by incorporating all of the age groups together to compete with each other. The team is also trying to identify who is going to step up and really help the team out this season. It is a good place to start seeing who can be and who wants to be a leader on the Uintah High School football team. "We get unified and follow the model of unity at the camp," said Harding. Uintah High School has their annual Red and White Scrimmage at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15. Everyone is welcome to come support sup-port the team, and get a glimpse at what the team has in store for the season. s- .- . 1 1 r i y . . .. . By Ryah Allen Express Writer The Vernal 9-year-old All-Star All-Star baseball team headed to Panguitch last week on July 29 to play in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament. This tournament tour-nament brings in team from all over the Pacific and Southwest regions of the country, and some from outside Pacific islands. The tournament included teams from Utah, California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and Guam. All-in-all there was a grand total of 16 teams in the tournament. The team from Vernal played five games against five different teams in the tougher half of the bracket. First off, Vernal played the team from Oalkand, Calif, where they say their first loss. Then Vernal played against the team from Scottsdale, Ariz., for a second sec-ond loss. Their fortunes then turned in possibly the best and featured game of the tournament when Vernal faced Long Beach, Calif. In this game there certainly wasn't a pitching duel, because both offenses of-fenses made sure of that. Both teams ended up scoring in double digits. It was the only game in the entire tournament that this occurred. Every player for the Vernal team got a hit and scored a run. By the end of the game the final score was 20-16 with Vernal coming out on top of Long Beach. " Everybody in the whole facility facil-ity was on the fences," said coach Kurt Case. Next Vernal played against the team from Southern California. Cali-fornia. Vernal taught Southern California a lesson on how baseball is played in Vernal by winning their second game in a row. Their next and final game was against the team of Northern California. They needed to win this game to have beaten both ends of the California spectrum. Northern California, however, came out on top of Vernal, leaving leav-ing the Basin's 9-year-olds with a 2-3 tournament record. Vernal did not make it out of their pool and into the next round. Their pool was the toughest tough-est one, as three of the four teams that advanced to the next round were form Vernal' s pool. Case estimated that Vernal was , about the eighth best team out , SEE ALL STARS on C2 i t OA 3&& i if' ' i I ' , ! f i 151 West 200 North 789-3342 886-725-2362 www.ashIeyregional.com Dr. Dean Anderson recently joined the ER Physician Group at Ashley Regional Medical Center.
