Show Vernal Express Wednesday, July 16, 2008 C3 American Legion heads to regional tournament The Uintah American Legion baseball team has a first place seed as they head to the region qualifier tournament this weekend at College of Eastern Utah in Price. The last tournament that Uintah played in was just a couple of weeks ago, where they avenged a previous loss from the year by beating Helper 9-4. Thn Uintah players, Colter Christensen and Braiden Atwood and Jake Bailey, hit multiple home runs in the tournament. "Jake Bailey really dominated the game against Helper," said Coach Jeff Handberg. But the tournament also gave Uintah a couple of losses against Virgin Valley and the Pocatello Regulators, Regula-tors, a college prep team. Uintah lost to Pocatello by a score of 5-3. Uintah goes into the region tourney with a record of 16 wins and four losses and are the No 1 seed in the region. Games for the tourney will be played at the College Col-lege of Eastern Utah Field this Friday and Saturday. The key match up in this tournament will be against Cedar City. The pitcher for Cedar City, Ryan Eldridge, has a 90 mph fast ball. He plans on playing next season sea-son for his father, David Eldridge, at Southern Utah University. If the Uintah team finishes either first or second in the region tournament, they will qualify for state tournament, which starts July 26 in Salt Lake City. If they qualify Uintah will be the only team at state that draws their players from a single high school. Most of the state's top teams are put together with players from several high schools mixed in with players that have already competed as freshman in college. Paleontologist to speak on stegosaurus discovery The Utah Field House of Natural History will host paleontologist Russell Jacobson for a lecture on July 21 about his recent work in the Morrison Formation in Montana. Jacobson, recently retired from the Illinois State Geological Survey, and has worked in numerous dinosaur dino-saur quarries all around the United States. A prolific writer, he has authored or co-authored many papers, abstracts, maps and guide books. Working with the Judith River Dinosaur Institute, Jacobson has spent two seasons unearthing a significant find with numerous stegosaurus deposits. "The two weeks spent at the Snowy Mountains sites this past summer surpassed wildest expectations in the quantity and quality of bones uncovered," Jacobson said. "Our stegosaur, "Rosie," has turned into an exceptional specimen with many elements of an associated skeleton such as completely articulated limbs, vertebra, ribs, pelvis, tail spikes and some of the largest and most completed dorsal plates ever found." The program will begin at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. Contact the Utah Field House for additional information. Basin students at CEU earn SkillsUSA honors Three College of Eastern Utah students from the Uintah Basin attended the 2008 SkillsUSA national competition held in Kansas City, Mo., late last month, and were recognized for their technical proficiency. Mason Winters of Jensen, a student in CEU's welding department, took the gold in postsecondary welding. "Since College of Eastern Utah students began competing at SkillsUSA in 200 1 , they have continually improved their standings," said the school's welding instructor, Lon Youngberg. "In 2001 CEU's representative represen-tative finished seventh; sixth in 2003; fourth in 2004; fourth in 2005; second in 2006; second in 2007; and finally reached the gold medal stand in 2008." A team comprised of Vernal residents Riley Harrison Har-rison and Nick Richens, and Josh Critchlow of Price, also earned gold medals in a newly created category called team welding fabrication. SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations. oc-cupations. The national competition is held annually to provide pro-vide students with national-level competition in 91 different areas of technical education. Contestants represent the 300,000 members from all 50 states and four territories, but only 2 percent are invited to the national competition. Utah ranked tops in worker freedom In its inaugural national report card on worker freedom, the Washington, D.C. -based Alliance for Worker Freedom has given Utah the highest grade in the nation. Utah, which continues to receive national accolades, was the only state to receive an "A" on the state grading grad-ing index. The AWF studied and compared each state by measuring the level of worker freedom and analyzing state policy and quantitative data. The report v as based on 10 variables: right to work, minimum wage, union density, paycheck protection, prevailing wage, defined contribution pension, collective bargaining rights, public sector union membership, entrepre-, neurial uctivity, and workers compensation. The Alliance for Worker Freedom's report card is expected to provide the public along with business and civic leaders a tool for engaging a state's commitment commit-ment to servi ng its workforce by analyzing established working conditions and policies.
