Vernal Express J it f V r- r u X r1 In a minor league game between the Dodgers and A's the A's runner slides safely back into 3rd base after being in a little bit of a pickle. f Little League provides fun for all By Ryan Am n Express Writer Little League Baseball is played by kids all across the country. In Vernal it is no different. differ-ent. The kids play it, the coaches coach it and the parents and family members come out and New guidebook guide-book offered on byways The Utah Field House of Natural History, in association with the Intermountain Natural History Association, announced the release last week of "A Field Guide to the Flaming GorgeUin-tas GorgeUin-tas National Scenic Byway." .This comprehensive guide takes a look at the geology, botany, bota-ny, wildlife and human history of the byway in a mile-by-mile road log. In addition, each subject is expanded upon to guide the user in understanding the abundant natural history of the byway. Both frequent and first time drivers will find the field guide useful in explaining some of the many mysteries and wonders of the byway. How did the deep canyons form and what kind of fossils may be found in the exposed layers? What kind of plant and animal communities may be found along the byway and how does the geology influence influ-ence them? What people were here before us and how did they use the areas that the byway now passes through? "This new road guide will augment any visitor's experience experi-ence on the byway," said Mark Wilson, president of the Dino-saurland Dino-saurland Travel Board. "The well-researched information really helps to fill in the story behind the awesome scenery one encounters." The kids come for many different dif-ferent reasons. For the most part they just want to have a good time and to show their competitive spirit. The coaches are there to help guide the young athletes on the way to learning to play better and they are also there to help the children succeed and have fun. The parents come for more reasons than you might think. Sure, the major reason is that their child is competing in the game. Perhaps the real reason they come is to have a good time themselves. You can see it in the parents' eyes when their child comes up to bat how they so badly want their kid to do well. Often times they look much more nervous than the child actually playing the game. That's what parents do though. There are moments in Little League that all the people in attendance at-tendance want to happen. They are the moments that everyone is waiting for, a moment to make everyone go home happy. One of these moments happened hap-pened on June 10. It was in a minor league, the league for ages 9-10, game between the Dodgers and the A's. When I asked his team how they were doing coach Kurt Case said proudly, "We're doing well, and one of our 9-year-olds hit a home run today." That 9-year-old was Ryan Case. Moments like this is what makes Little League and all youth sports so great. Moments like this send everyone home happy, except perhaps the other team. r v l i it-; 1 Breed Searle, coach of the coach pitch team the Cubs, sends the ball through the machine straight towards the plate.
