Ospreys return to Steinaker The pair of nesting osprey (Pandion haliaetus) have returned re-turned to Steinaker, for the second year in a row. A sure sign of spring, they have already spruced up their nest, and we all hope that they successfully fledge some chicks this year. With a six-foot wingspread, these "fish hawks" make a spectacular spec-tacular appearance as they bank and hover over the lake, searching search-ing for a victim. If you are lucky, you may see one plunge feet first into the water, to emerge with a thrashing fish. Aloneamongthebirdsofprey, the Osprey has two talons that face forwards, and two that can face backwards, to close on a slippery slip-pery fish in a vise-like grip. They are quite good at it, which may ' be why they are so often robbed by their larger cousin, the Bald Eagle. ' The osprey is among the most cosmopolitan of bird species, and it can be found on, every continent except Antarctica. It is very distinctive, being dark brown above and white below, with a dark mask across a mostly white face. Also, the wings have a unique look, with a sharp bend at the "wrist." Because of its widespread occurrence oc-currence and distinctive looks, it was one of the first bird species spe-cies to be named by the great classifier, Carolus Linnaeus. In 1809 Linnaeus dubbed it Pandion Pan-dion haliaetus, after Pandion, a mythological king of Athens who was transformed into an eagle. Osprey declined precipitously in the 1950s and 1960s, laying extremely thin-shelled eggs that are associated with widespread DDT use. Since more strict controls con-trols on pesticide use were imposed, im-posed, they have been recovering (along with bald eagles, peregrine falcons and brown pelicans). Yet osprey seem to expand their range very slowly, and the Steinaker couple is a welcome extension. Since osprey mate for life, this same couple may occupy the nest for a few years, returning each spring from their southerly migration. Flaming Gorge has been an osprey stronghold for years, and that is very likely where the Steinaker birds were fledged. Perhaps the young that will be raised here will reconquer other lakes and reservoirs of Northeastern Utah. Personal watercraft course offered Utah's boating officials remind re-mind the public to include plans for" Utah's .Personal Watercraft Education Course as they plan summer boating trips to Utah's lakes or reservoirs, Utah law provides the opportunity oppor-tunity for youths 12 through 17 to operate a personal watercraft (PWC, i.e. Sea Doo, Jet Ski, and Wave Runner) if they meet the following conditions: Persons 12 through 17 must successfully complete Utah's PWC Education Course and carry their certificate with them whenever they operate. . Course includes instruction instruc-tion and reviewing important Utah boating laws and rules, viewing a PWC safety video, addressing common boating courtesies, identifying buoys and hazards, and passing a written test.
