Walleye illegally introduced By Geoff Liesik Uintah Basin News Service The future of fishing at Red Fleet Reservoir is in question after biologists with the state Division of Wildlife Resources discovered late last month that walleye have been illegally introduced intro-duced there. DWR fisheries biologist Ed Johnson said two of three gill nets set in late May turned up 22 walleye from at least two age classes. Twenty of the fish were at least 2 years old. The remaining two were 4. years .old-- - Johnson said it's not the first ives Last year was a banner year for the livestock of Powder River Rodeo. The famed World Champion Cham-pion Saddle Bronc Miss Congeniality Conge-niality was ridden by Anthony Bello in Idaho Falls, Idaho, for 90 points and the big win at the War Bonnet Stampede in August 2007. Bello teamed up with Miss Congeniality again for another 90-point win at the Dallas, Texas, Championship Tour Rodeo in November. Josh Reynolds was 90 points in Plains, Mont., in September. And two years earlier, Reynolds was 90 points on Miss Congeniality Congenial-ity at the same rodeo. Cody Demoss rode the famous Touch of Silver in the final eight in Omaha, Neb., at the Tour Championships to advance him to the final four where he drew Miss Congeniality and was 91 points for the championship win. A third fish was turned in by an angler. All three fish were males. "We figured maybe the guy who had illegally stocked them had made a mistake and just accidentally acci-dentally stocked males," Johnson said. "We didn't see them for five or six years and all of a sudden they showed up. We're not really sure if we had another illegal stocking or if they are spawn from the original illegal stocking." Miss Congeniality was named the 2007 World Champion Saddle Bronc in the PRCA after a phenomenal phe-nomenal summer. This was a repeat honor for the 10-year old mare. Miss Congeniality was also voted as the fourth top saddle bronc at the National Finals Rodeo for 2007. Touch of Silver, a gray 10-year old gelding, was only ridden twice in 2007. Touch of Silver has not been ridden at the National Finals Fi-nals Rodeo for the last three years and has been on the voting ballot for the top Saddle Bronc at the NFRforthelastthreeyears. Just a few months ago at the Dodge National Circuit Finals he was awarded the second place top saddle bronc of the finals along with the past World Champion Saddle Bronc Cool Alley owned by Kesler Rodeo. The camps help with teach the fundamentals of golf. The camps are started off on a Monday and last four days. That means they typically end on a Thursday. Each daily session lasts four hours. Two hours are spent on instruction with two additional ad-ditional hours out on the course getting some actual playing time in. The goals are simple: give students the fundamental skills so they can keep moving on to having fun as they continue to play the game of golf. "Our goal is to get them to have fun," said camp instructor Mike Behle. The students of these camps learn how to play, they learn how to have fun, along with many other things that will help Johnson said walleye in Red Fleet will "decimate the fishery that's there, " wiping out mature populations of large-mouth bass, bluegill, rainbow and brown trout. "It won't be long before the reservoir's overrun with walleye," wall-eye," he said. "Then they'll eat everything and then they'll start eating each other." If there's a larger concern than the immediate threat to Red Fleet, it's the worry over the reservoir's drainages. Red Fleet empties into the Green River, Johnson said, which is home to several species of endangered Isaac Diaz to the first round win at the Omaha, Neb., Championship Champion-ship Tour. A tremendous young horse, Double Take was another round winner in Dallas, Texas. Top bulls from D&H Cattle and Powder River Rodeo had top 89 scores in Omaha with two round wins with Logan Knibbe and Wesley Silcox. Silcox was knocked out in the semi-finals on Crossfire Hurricane and suffered suf-fered injuries to his face and jaw. Savage Shaker bucked Ted Bert off in the final round in Omaha. Savage Shaker and Ted Bert teamed up again at the NFR in December for 90 points this time and won the eighth round. Powder River Rodeo compiled a great list of livestock for the 2007. National Finals Rodeo. Horses included Spotted Bird, Rain Maker, Sundown, Touch of Silver, Smoke Jumper, Miss Congeniality and Big Chill. LJ -tJ I I r m ISO GoaiFrJ mm G them out with the game in the future. "We're teaching them the basics of golf," said Behle. "We're teaching them the grip, stance, chipping, putting and driving." Not only do they learn the skills but they learn the proper way to play with etiquette. They learn what is proper and what isn't. "We want to let them know golf is a gentleman's game," said Behle. On Monday morning, after the instruction time was over, Behle took the students onto the golf course to play against him in a scramble, where they each play their shot off the tee and continue to play the best ball through every ev-ery shot to the hole. The goal is for them to beat their instructor in a little healthy competition. Dinaland Golf Course will hold more camps for the youth of the community throughout the summer to teach skills and the etiquette. Camps are scheduled July 7-10, July 28-31 and Aug. 4-7. at Red Fleet, reward offered fish that would be wiped out by walleye. Water from the reservoir is also piped into Steinaker Reservoir Reser-voir and then treated to provide culinary water for Vernal. That makes chemically treating the reservoir - a move that would kill not only the walleye, but all the fish at Red Fleet - particularly tricky. On Wednesday, in its most immediate move to address the problem, the DWR issued an emergency order mandating that anglers kill all walleye caught at Red Fleet, There is no limit on the number of walleye that can anner year NFR bulls included Savage Shaker, Bonified, Holey Moley and Snakebite. D&H Cattle, partnered with Powder River Rodeo, took bulls Crossfire Hurricane, Hur-ricane, Super Duty, Sunshine, Sports Machine and Black Smoke. This past year Hank and Lori Franzen also had three rodeos they produce nominated for Top Rodeo of the year in the PRCA. Belle Fourche, S.D., for medium; Estes Park, Colo., for small; and Caldwell, Idaho, for large rodeos of the year. After 22years of being in the rodeo business tremendous livestock and phenomenal rodeo productions have made Powder River Rodeo one of the top rodeo ro-deo companies in the business. Powder River will again provide stock at this year's Dinoasur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, July 9-12 at Western Park. Chemical treatment will only be pursued if biologists determine deter-mine that anglers alone cannot control the walleye population. DWR Lt. Torrey Christo-phersen Christo-phersen said leaving a body of water with live fish is a misdemeanor. mis-demeanor. Transplanting fish is a felony, the lieutenant said, especially considering the cost involved in repairing the harm it causes. Christophersen acknowledged acknowl-edged that it's "difficult, but not impossible" for investigators to catch someone responsible for illegally introducing fish.
