Uintah splits first two home games By Casey Christensen Express Writer Uintah baseball started the past week off with a loss to Juan Diego, 7-1, they then won an eight-inning game over Emery 11-10. Head Coach Brent Labium La-bium said he felt the team needs to cut down on walks alio wed and errors to be successful. "We have only been on our field for one week and now with it snowing again it is making it very difficult to get where we need to be," he said. "Making good throws and committing fewer errors is a priority right now. Also our pitchers need to get more control of their pitches and work ahead in the count." Uintah had five errors in the Juan Diego game. They scored their only point in the second 'A 1 I (MM Brodie Ayotte slides safely into third base early in the Uintah's win over Emery. Pat Hacking led from the plate with a single and a double while Kyle Hancock had one double. "We had some errors that hurt us in the second inning," said Labrum. "Lucero pitched pretty good, we just need to catch and throw better." The Emery game started off with Uintah gaining a 6-2 lead through the third. But the lead was lost as the Utes struggled through the fourth. Josh Curtis pitched the first four innings, before walking with the bases loaded and giving up a double. " Curtis pitched well into the fourth inning when he got tired, " stated Labrum. Gary Hacking steppedintofill the role of pitcher and gave up a walk followed by a grand slam. Uintah fought to get back in the game and tied the score up in the seventh with one out remaining. remain-ing. Dallas Smuin hit a single and Hancock was able to get on base due to a Emery throwing error that scored Smuin. With the score tied the eighth inning started with Austin McCauley taking one for the team. Lucero struck out and then Curtis hit a single. Colter Christensen copied McCauley selfless act and took a trip to first base. The bases were loaded as Hacking strolled up to the plate and executed a suicide bunt for the win, scoring Mc Cauley. Uintah had 13 hits and two errors, Emery scored their 10 runs on six hits and three errors. Smuin hit a home-run and two singles to lead Uintah. Curtis and Christensen had several hits each. Hacking received the win. Uintah allowed nine walks. Uintah's second region contest con-test will be against Park City at home on April 4. That is if the weather cooperates with the team. Express Writer Uintah dropped a game to Bear River 2-1 on March 26 to end their pre-season schedule. The unusually low score was due in part to Bear River's tough pitching staff, said Head Coach Clay Robb, but added "We still did not hit the ball the way we're capable of hitting." Uintah out-produced Bear River from the plate 6-5 and only recorded one error. A good game in most opinions, however, they were unable to convert their hits into points. Madisen Robb and Chanel Pace led Uintah with three hits each. "We had one inning that we loadedthebasesandonlyhadone out," said the coach. "We didn't score . We had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning with a runner on third and only one out and didn't come through. So the team was disappointed, but resolved to meet them at state to redeem themselves." Bear River scored their two runs in the first inning off one hit. Uintah stiffened up following follow-ing the inning and Bear River struggled. "Our defense was pretty strong and played confident," said C. Robb. He noted that he had expected tough games from Bear River and Cedar City, so he scheduled the two teams to help Uintah prepare. "Both teams are expected to be some of the top five teams at state, especially due to their pitchers," said the coach. "At Bear River, six of our starters were made up of freshman and sophomores. They all played great and all will make a big impact on Region play." "Again, preseason for us this year was getting a lot of experience experi-ence and playing knowledge. The girls are ready and are expected to start region off with confidence and our bats on fire." In his opinion Uintah has faced some of the toughest pitching pitch-ing Utah has to offer and that experience should help them during region play. "They know they can hit anyone any-one at anytime," he said. "They also learned that they need to start batting well early in the game." Uintah will face Park City, at home, in their second region contest on April 3. The game begins at 3 p.m. "We look forward to starting our region this week," said C. Robb. "We are prepared and excited to get what we call our second season started." U . .7. v ! MaKenzie Timothy winds up to pitch the Softball during a game against Bear River. Uintah lost the game 2-1 as they struggled in the batter box again. Highest Quality Kyle Hancock bunts the ball to get a single in the first inning against Emery.
