This year, it took Barb two weeks to carefully remove each hand-painted house from their boxes. Then it took two weeks to set up the display. "I started in 1992 with just six houses and now, I have up to 65 houses," Barb explains. She does this for the pleasure of her family but thinks it is pretty special too. f v Te- ! (2P 189 South Vernal Ave. Vernal 789-0789 It was winter, January 1947, on a little spread in the sandhills around Stapleton, Nebraska. Herb and Daisy Rundback had a small herd of first time heifers and they were calving out. Such is the time for calves with most ranchers, though there were times when winter storms and prairie winds made you wonder if a later calving date would have been better. You would lose those extra months of weight gain, always necessary. Christmas had come and it was a good'n. Though they had little in the way of cash, it had been a joyous time and Herb was pleased with his cowboy life style. His spread was doing well, and so were his cows. What more could any man want for Christmas. He had made a darn good chap trade with his hired hand just the fall before Theangora chaps Herb owned, though warm, were bulky. He admired the stylish leggings the man wore. The 'R.T. Frazier's,' as they would ever after be known wee just right, and not so cumbersome. Both .men knew each had made the 1 best trade. Those leggings would serve him well at' many a rodeo where most always won. They had just the right amount of flash for the short, stocky build man who only rodeo'd when he needed extra cash. They were a little long when he first got them, so he cut the leather making a neat fold that he riveted tight. Many years later when his grandson would see Grandpa's originals in a catalog, he discovered Grandpa had cut the bottom cuff away. Winter on any ranch has its share of chores. Repairing, cleaning, clean-ing, and conditioning cowboy gear is mighty important. Herb gave his equipment undivided attention. Each piece had a thorough thor-ough going over. Such was his work one cold January morning when he and Daisy had started their day. The wind had been bad the day before and the sky was foreboding and turning dark gray green and black, as it ill do on the prairie. The cows and new calves were in the North pasture, not far from the house. Those babies were brand new, and a winter storm could raise the dickens with them, sometimes taking their lives. Daisy moved nervously around the kitchen as she watched Herb, knowing full well that he would saddle up and head for that pasture. pas-ture. It had barely crossed her mind, when Herb arose and said, "Dais', I've got to get General saddled and check my cows." Heart in her throat she replied, re-plied, "I'll help." Grabbing his heaviest coat, hat, and wrapping his ear s, they headed for the barn. General nickered, knowing that he was headed for some tough cold work. The stout horse now saddled, Herb reached for the R.T. Frazier's hanging on the v $ it l i (f I TRUSTED SECURE RESPECTED Since 1907. Herb mounted, and told Daisy not to worry, he would be back with their cows. Closer to home they would have more shelter from the biting winds and freezing snow. That horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach was well founded. In the next few hours she would see her husband close to froze, and knocking on deaths door. The wind drove the wet snow. It pounded the man and horse with vicious intent. When they reached the pasture they were white moving forms that frightened the cattle. Herb was determined that his herd must be saved. He gathered and pushed with General's help, but the storm, now a full blizzard showed no mercy. It was so cold. By the grace of God, Herb managed to move the cows in a homeward direction. They lined out, and headed in. Hours later, wet to the core, the saddle and chaps froze together from the driving wind. They held the man in place on the horse.' He could not see, or hear. He was in trouble! "The General," he managed, "he will get me home. " Not knowing which direction to turn, Herb gave the horse his full head. The big horse turned and started moving. Two frozen forms appeared in the white-out in Daisy yard. The slumped figure on the horse was her dear husband. General had done it, but he had come in many hours behind the cattle. Every one of the cows and calves had made it. Not a single one would be lost. But what of the man? Frantically she worked in the howling wind and could not budge him. Suddenly as if some unseen hand gave a mighty push, Herb collapsed on top of Daisy. He was out of the saddle! She moved General into the barn with swooshing hands. No trouble, as the horse was only too glad to enter. She tugged and drug her husband to the house. Working on him for hours she warned frozen appendages and revived this half dead man. Little by little, Herb responded. Two days later the storm had finally blown itself out. Doc made it to the house. Herb was in a bad way but would make it. He had saved those precious cos with the help of General, and gut determination. de-termination. Doc just stood over him shaking his head.
