Thomas' four-point buck was shot in the Cowboy Canyon area with a .243 rifle. Thomas was hunting with his grandpa, Keith Goodrich, and his uncle, Bryan Goodrich when they spotted the buck. "We were walking around and we just saw it," said Thomas. His first shot went through the deer's lungs from 100-yards away. "I said, 'wow' and then my grandpa slapped me on the back," explained Thomas. They jumped into the truck and drove to his buck. "I was amazed and kind of proud at how big he was," he stated. He doesn't plan on topping the buck next year, but says he plans to try. Ice hockey coach leads teams to success With the start of the local ice hockey season just around the corner, it is important to remember the roots of the sport in Vernal. Fifteen years ago, Al Brown, a Jensen local, flooded his horseback riding arena to build an ice rink. That firstyear 12 kids, varying in age from 4 to 15, registered to play a sport no one knew much about. Brown coached them to victory in their one and only game that year, played against Craig, Colo. The score was 5-0. Brown continued to coach youth hockey in Vernal until 2005, when he moved to Greeley, Gree-ley, Colo. Last year marked Al's inaugural season as the head of the men's hockey team at the University of Northern Colorado. Colo-rado. For the first time ever the Bears defeated their rival, University Uni-versity of Colorado, Boulder, three times. Brown led the team to a perfect regular season, winning 26 of 26 games played. They went on to take fifth at the national championships in Fort Wayne, In. The record was enough to garner Brown the coach of the year award form theACHA. This year is shaping up to be another great one for Brown and the Bears. The team currently stands at 8-0-0. This record includes in-cludes two wins against Colorado State University, a team that is a division above UNC. The Bears recently returned from North-wood North-wood University in Midland, Mich., with a gold medal. This annual invitational tournament is assumed to be a sneak-peek of the national tournament. Among the teams they defeated de-feated at the tournament was Northwood University, the team that defeated UNC at nationals last year and the only loss suffered suf-fered by the Bears during the year. |
