Do you know how Memorial Day was started? It was first celebrated in 1868 and people used the day to honor soldiers who had died during the Civil War. The first memorial activities were in a town called Waterloo, New York. People honored those who had died by decorating their graves and holding a ceremony. Because of this practice of decorating graves, Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. In 1971, Memorial Day became be-came an official National Holiday. Now, Memorial Day is officially set aside to honor those who have died during any war. There might be parades to honor veterans and flags are flown on many houses. The graves of those who have fought in wars are visited and decorated with flowers. Many people also spend time visiting the graves of family members even if they are not veterans. A veteran is anyone who has served in the military. Families also use the holiday to get together with family members mem-bers and as way to celebrate the beginning of summer. In 2000, Congress added to Memorial Day an officialMoment of Remembrance so people across the country would remember the sacrifices of those who had died in defense of the country. The National Moment of Remembrance Remem-brance is held every Memorial Day at 3:00 p.m. The biggest Memorial Day ceremony is held at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Small flags are placed by the side of each grave and the President or Vice-President gives a speech. After Af-ter the speech, a wreath is placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tomb that was built as a memorial to those who died of Memorial Day because the in battle but could not be identi- soldiers buried there represent fied. The Tomb of the Unknown sacrifice and selfless service to Soldier is an important symbol the country. Flags are put on every grave at Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day. McCrae fought in World War I and wrote the poem about a battlefield in northern France. He wrote the poem about the bright red poppy flowers that grew around the rows of white crosses that marked the deaths of soldiers on the field to encourage people to remember the sacrifices of those who fought in the war. Artificial poppies that are made by veterans who have been wounded in wars and can't work are often sold on Memorial Day and on other days throughout membering those who have uie ycai w iieip suppun uiese veterans. died in battle Poppies are a symbol of re in Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
