Fire potential high for eastern and southwestern parts of Utah As the 2007 wildland fire season sea-son approaches current weather and fuel conditions indicate the possibility of extreme fire potential in southwestern Utah again this year. Most of the rest of the state is predicted to have normal to drought conditions. Most of central and eastern Utah, especially higher elevations, may have higher fire potential than normal. "Predicting our wildland fire season is not an exact science," said Tracy Dunford, fire management manage-ment officer for the Utah Division Divi-sion of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. "However, indications are we're entering this season pretty much the same as last year when we saw the heaviest fire activity in the southwest portion of the state." Most of southern Utah and some eastern areas are the last reminders of a prolonged drought. Moisture levels remain abnormally low with the U.S. Drought Monitor Index currently cur-rently designating the area as severe. It of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest are 50 to 60 percent of average and surrounding areas are about 70 to 80 percent of average which may indicate more potential for fires in the higher elevations. "Once again southwestern Utah has the potential for a severe fire season this year. The heavier fuels are dry and prone to large fire growth," said Bureau of Land Management Fire Management Manage-ment Officer Sheldon Wimmer. "As cheat grass in the western desert matures it will be easily ignited and have the potential to grow into large fires, especially when winds kick up." Federal, state and local fire management agencies urge everyone to be careful in their use of fire. As spring turns to summer and more people seek outdoor recreation the potential for wildland fire increases. "As in years past, we are entering enter-ing the start of this current fire season with a strong prediction of a major fire season. While there are never any guarantees Guest Writer Four teenagers from Uintah County headed for Salt Lake last week dressed in their most professional attire and ready to debate real issues. Each year the 4-H clubs, through the Utah State University Extension Office, offer students from all over Utah state, the opportunity to sit in a real legislator's chair during a one day "mock legislature." Representing Uintah County for the day were three students from Vernal Junior High, Haylee Crane, Rhet Gardner and Heather Thompson; and one student from Uintah High School, one of eight 4-H state TT Clarification An article in last week's VernalExpress should have reported that medication errors had increased in April at the Uintah Care Center. Also, the article implied that three nurses left the center as a result of the errors. That was not the case, according to Uintah Care tenter Administrator Wayne Dunbar. , as to intensity and duration, the public needs to be aware of conditions around them and act accordingly. We live in a fire dependent environment and the potential for a wildfire is always there," said Mike Dudley, Fire, aviation and air director for the Intermountain Region of the U.S. Forest Service. Federal and state agencies continue to work with communities commu-nities at risk from wildland fire to develop Community Wildfire Protection Plans. Since the inception of the National Fire Plan, the USDA Forest Service, BLM, and Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands have assisted as-sisted about 100 communities statewide in completing plans. Communities with those plans in place are given priority for funding fund-ing of hazardous fuels reduction projects. The latest information regarding re-garding Utah's wildland fire danger, dan-ger, fire restrictions, fire updates and preventive measures can be foundatwww.utahfireinfo.gov. W ambassadors, Alisa Gerber. Rep. Paul Ray of Davis County was on hand throughout the day to guide participants through the process. "Aboutfifteenlegislative bills, which at one time were really presented in committee, are assigned to these kids for review and debate," stated Ray. Many of the bills reviewed in committee impacted teenagers specifically. Alisa Gerber of Vernal was asked to sponsor a bill banning theuse of cell phones for teen drivers. After her well presented statistics and some debate about the merits of the bill, her committee voted to send her bill to the floor for a vote by all the Utah State "mock" legislators.
