Show A6 Wednesday, August 16, 2006 Strategies for retaining hey employees By Delmer Hyde If your company relies on the services, expertise and management skills of a few key people, losing one of them to a competitor could have a severe impact on your bottom line. Your star performers are the ones who may be wooed by other companies or may decide to set up their own shop. So, to protect your business operations, opera-tions, it's prudent to cultivate the type of work environment that can help avoid costly key employee turnover. For example, many business busi-ness owners have found that their top executives thrive on autonomy. They want a sense of job ownership and are likely to work well under such conditions because, in many respects, these people are entrepreneurs who just happen to work for you. If possible, give your top employees autonomy by passing pass-ing on more responsibility for day-to-day business activities activi-ties like planning, budgeting, hiring and firing and setting incentive goals for their people. Then, compensate them to a large extent on the basis of performance. per-formance. This helps keep your key executives challenged and motivated and gives them a feeling of being in business for themselves. Another effective tool in retaining key employees is benefits. A quality benefits package may be as important as a competitive salary. And, a company that provides such a program is likely to become the employer of choice. Of course, because good benefits LM pulls 16 The bureau of Land Management is giving serious seri-ous consideration to the Memorandum Decision and Order by U.S. District Judge Dale A. A comprehensive employee benefits package may include a retirement savings program like a 401(k), a health care plan and, perhaps, life insurance. You may also want to consider providing help with childcare, in the form of an on-site facility or in conjunction with a local provider. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations(JCAHO) had published several articles dealing with the subject, and AVMC had recently opened their new ER, so the team felt it was a great time to improve the process. One of the goals of the improvement process was to make sure that patients were spending the least amount of time possible waiting in the ER. The entire process from admissions to departures was examined over the course of several months. If a situation was found that slowed down the process, or presented a patient safety risk, a plan was developed to improve that process. pro-cess. When bottlenecks were found to be occurring, solutions were suggested and implemented. implement-ed. Sometimes several solutions solu-tions had to be tried before real improvements were seen. "As a hospital team of employees, practitioners and volunteers, we work hard together to provide the best patient care possible. Recent data from the Center for Disease Control(CDC) indicates indi-cates that 66 percent of ER visits vis-its nationwide lasted from 1 to 6 hours, and that the average patient stay in the Emergency Room was 3.2 hours. AVMC data from 2005 shows that, on the average, 80 percent of the patients at AVMC are in the Emergency Room less than 3 hours, and that almost 50 percent per-cent of the patients are out in under one hour. An average of only 10 percent of patients that visit the ER at AVMC have visits that last over 3 hours. Compared to national data, wait times at the AVMC ER are significantly less. Ashley Valley Medical Center has also recently joined the National Patient Safety Foundation in a continuing effort to provide excellent customer cus-tomer service and patient safety. safe-ty. The foundation provides educational materials for the general public as well as training train-ing materials for the staff at AVMC. AVMC recently celebrated National Patient Safety Week by providing informational seminars for the general public pub-lic with materials provided by the National Patient Safety Foundation. "AVMC is continually seeking seek-ing to improve the care and safety of our patients," stated stat-ed Debbie Spafford, Public Relations Director. "To that end, we are always interested in input from the community on how we can improve our services."
