Jones Hole is the name given to a 2,000-foot-deep gorge that runs along the border between Utah and Colorado in Dinosaur National Monument. Jones Hole Creek, in the bottom of the gorge, is fed from a number of small springs at the head of the canyon and along its sides. The Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is located at the end of the Jones Hole Scenic backway and uses water from one of these springs. Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery was established estab-lished in 1956 under Section 8 of the Colorado River Storage Project Act, and produced its first trout in 1970. Located on 390 acres in a sandstone geologic geo-logic setting, the hatchery provides management man-agement and production of trout for mitigation miti-gation of Colorado River Storage Project waters of the Upper Colorado River System and to meet Tribal trust respon-" sibilities on Native American land. The-hatchery The-hatchery primarily raises rainbow trout, brown trout and brook trout. The Jones Hole Trail begins just below the first spring, beyond the hatchery and winds along the creek for about four miles to join the Green River in Whirlpool Canyon. The four-mile hiking trail goes through several examples of Uintah Basin climates, including a pond with a cascading cascad-ing waterfall. Along the trail look for wildlife, wild-life, petroglyphs, and pictographs.-There is also an area on the trail for camping. To get to Jones Hole from Vernal go north on Vernal Avenue until 500 North. Turn east on the Diamond Mountain Road and follow the signs until the road ends. The road is paved the entire distance. dis-tance. Upon arriving at the fish hatchery one will see many ponds filled with baby fish.
