SIP Brian Nelson, who plays the' role of the Ugly Duckling, stands in the middle of his five duckling sisters: Kyristi Labrum, Eve Denzer, Stephanie Shurtliff, Hannah Lova and Aimee Terrill. Junior High to present musical, "HONK!" Vernal Junior High presents pres-ents HONK! a musical based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic story "The Ugly Duckling." This tale is about a lonely "duckling" misunderstood misunder-stood by his sisters, father and the rest of the duck yard. The story encompasses his journey from a hatchling to his realization realiza-tion of his true beauty. The protagonist is the Cat played by Adam Durant. The not-so-kind or friendly neighbors are Grace: Kristine Jolley, Maureen: Abigail Gray, Henrietta: Cecilly Francisco, Turkey: Jordan Evans, Roosters: David Squires and Arnell Cesspooch, and Maggie Pie from America's Most Feathered: Rebecca Kitzmiller and Mickala Merrell. The commander of the goose squad Greylag: Jacob Goddard and his wife Dot: Sally Wagner, have an amusing squad that includes Barnacles: Gage Larsen, Snowy: Arnell Cesspooch, Pinkfoot: Tyra Andreson. In his flight to get home he encounters a brash, domesticated domesti-cated Queenie the cat, also double dou-ble cast and played by Kristie Francisco and Rondee Jones, and a chicken, Lowbutt, played by Jessica Bernard. Further on his journey the young Ugly meets a beautiful swan, Penny, (Kelly Ross) and her family, played by David Squires, Rachel Burrows, and Katrine Beattie. Finally he encounters the not-so attractive attrac-tive Bullfrog, also double cast and played by Taylor Pearson and Sam O'Driscol, who helps him realize that beauty is more than skin deep. The duck yard Fowl, Fish, Froglets, Goose squad are played by: Caitlin Batty, Bernie, Alisha Bodily, Karina Bolton, Samantha Collett, Danielle Hunting, Kristine Jolley, Rondee Jones, Kyrsti Labrum, Sara McQuivey, Elizabeth Murray, Mikayla Powell, Adrianna Ruppe, Amber Rust, Ali Slaugh, Erika Sullivan, Heather Thompson, Sophie Wallis, Jessica Warren, and Celeste Eaton. The technical support, which includes both students and members of the community, communi-ty, are a vital part of the play. The production staff includes the choreographer, Tyra Anderson, an eighth grader; stage manager Mindy Hunting; accompanist K.C. Hutt and Karilynne Pearson; costume mistress, Peggy Hunting; light and sound Randi Sorensen, Kaitlynn Winn, Travis Smuin and Alyssa Beard. Music director direc-tor is Reed Hanson. This production, directed by Norman Bernard is truly a family show. It is a story that is heartwarming, humorous, with a touch of romance and even a little roller-blading. Part of the fantasy of this musical for children chil-dren of all ages is how animal characteristics seep through the human masks. Director Norman Bernard said, "The students have loved shedding their skin, so to speak, and finding out what it feels like in someone else's skin. This is a great play and we are excited to perform it for our community." HONK! is being performed April 27-29 and May 1 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 in advance, and $5 at the door.
