Lapoint Elementary School celebrates Winter Olympics Students and staff at Lapoint Elementary School have enjoyed the Winter Olympics. They have learned some of the songs from the Olympics in 2002 and performed them at an assembly. Students participated in their winter mini-Olympics on Feb. 17 at Lapoint Elementary School. Some events had to be changed because Mother Nature did not provide any snow. Every child participated in five events which included: skiing on cookie trays, hockey, relays, curling with brooms, and "Jump Rope For Heart." Gold, silver and bronze awards were given in some of the events. Participants went to the "Olympic Village" for a nutritious nutri-tious snack. Families will join together on Feb. 22 for "Night of a 1,000 Stars." This literacy celebration celebra-tion occurs every year. This year Lapoint Elementary School has an Italian theme. A spaghetti dinner will be served to all, free of charge, at 5:30 p.m. Several of the workshops will celebrate the Winter Olympics. All participants will go home with a free book for their family fam-ily library. drive through the ages At Vernal's back door is one of the great drives of the West, the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway (otherwise (oth-erwise known as the "Drive Through the Ages"). It takes its place beside other great American drives, such as Trail Ridge Road (Rocky Mountain National Park) and the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Durango. The uniqueness of "our" drive is not matchless scenery however, it is scientific scientif-ic interest. Each layer of rock a "formation" "for-mation" has a distinctive and recognizable character, and was named and described by some pioneering scientist years ago. For instance, the colorful red and blue shale of the Morrison Formation was named more than a century ago, where it comes to the surface sur-face outside of Morrison, Colo. Even non-scientists can quickly quick-ly catch on to the names, and can absorb the gist of what the scenery is saying. The formations forma-tions are signed by a Scenic Byway Committee, which also designed various stops along the way to interpret how the ancient landscapes helped shape the countryside we see today. Our scenic byway is one of the highlights for tourists motoringbetween Yellowstone and Canyonlands. Driving the byway is a lot like driving into the Grand Canyon, if that were possible. You pass back into time, deeper and deeper into the rocks of Earth's history. Paradoxically, as you drive UP into the mountains, moun-tains, you are driving BACK into time. The gentle arch of the Uinta Anticline exposes Earth's history more conveniently conve-niently here than at Grand Canyon, or Canyonlands, or Zion, or Bryce. At those places, the formations are horizontal and widely spaced, and not one of those parks reveals as great a span of geologic time as a Phone: 435.789.7705 f"'1 7 Fax: 455.789.7706 .PurclMm(uptolm) f J 80 North Vernal Avenue Stated Income Loans Brett Reynolds Vernal, Utah 84078 Manufactured Housing Mortgage Loan Specialist breynoldsoptimimusa.coin . thm Perject Credu VTVS PROGRAM SCHEDULE 6:OOAM Local Sports Local PomtfCC Lite At Uintah Community ConnecbonLP Local PomtCC Spolwnan Channel Sponaman Channel 6:30 AM Hanna Jack Hanna Jack Hanna Jack Hanna Jack Hanna Jack Hanna fead tte Chttran 7:O0AM Aqua Kids Ona Ot Kids Club Kid Guides Gina IVs Kids Club Aqua Kids Uttmaie Choice Joel Ostaen Mvmriea 7:3 AM Bat Your Lite Jack Benny Show Andy Griffith Show Burns & Aen Show St root cast TV Local PomtCC Local PomtfCC 8:00 AM Community ConneoSonLP Primary Focus Local PomVCC Lite At Uintah Communrty ConnecbonLP BusmessWeek TV Adventure in Reatftng 8:3 AM Ps Business First Busmaa ftrst Business First Business Fnt Busness Local Sports JC Po TV :0t AM Local PonVCC Community ConnecbonLP Local PewtfCC Community Connection!. Xi Prevent unwanted litters, fix your critters. The Big Fix Spay and Neuter Clinic coming soon to Vernal and Roosevelt The Big Fix Mobile Discount Spay & Neuter Clinic will be at Milt's Ace Hardware in Vernal on Feb. 27, and Stewart's in Roosevelt on Feb. 28. The Big Fix offers dog and cat spay and neuter procedures at discounted discount-ed prices. No More Homeless Pets in Utah says that pet overpopula tion is the number one problem for animals in America. About 40,000 unwanted animals are put to death in city pounds and shelters in Utah every year. The best way to avoid the problem of unwanted pets is to make sure pets are spayed or neutered to avoid producing unwanted litters. The Big Fix also offers rabies, distemper, and feline leukemia vaccinations for pets. In addition, microchipping is offered. To pre-register for the Vernal location, call Jacque at 789-2367. drive across the Uintas. We drove it again last week. We passed the "rainbow beds" of the Morrison Formation at Steinaker, stopped to look at the towering Nayajo Formation at Bobcat Hill, passed the bright rusty beds of the Moenkopi Formation of Red Mountain, and finally stopped at the phosphate phos-phate plant's private interpretive interpre-tive exhibit, overlooking the strip mine in the Park City Formation. Even this industrial indus-trial site is an interesting and instructive view, adding to the scenery rather than subtracting. subtract-ing. Beyond it stretched the highway back to Vernal, with each formation distinct in the distance. How many times do we "Drive Through the Ages" without properly appreciating the beauty of our own Uintah County, as a visitor from New Jersey would?
