USOMATA musicale to be performed at St. Pauls Episcopal Church Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Virginia Ewell honored Virginia Ewell Last Tuesday at Western Park, the annual Medical Staff Governing Board Banquet for Ashley Valley Medical Center was held. During the banquet, the recipient of the Exceptional Service and Achievement Award was announced. Virginia Ewell, R.N., a longtime long-time employee at Ashley Valley Medical Center was honored with the award. The Board of Trustees created cre-ated this honor in 2001. Former recipients are Dr. Stringham, Dr. Seager, and Dr. Spendlove. To be considered for this honor, an individual needs to be affiliated with AVMC; have a tenure as a physician, staff member, volunteer, or board member (or a combination) of more than 10 years; and have improved health care in the Basin through their individual efforts, dedication to healthcare health-care and commitment to the hospital and community. Si Hutt, AVMC CEO stated "Virginia is such a wonderful wonder-ful person. She is always supportive sup-portive of others and has true compassion and caring. She has excellent clinical skills, is a fantastic teacher, and has earned the respect of the medical medi-cal staff, hospital staff and community. com-munity. It is an honor to work with such a person who exemplifies exem-plifies the mission and values ofAVMC." Ewell began working at Ashley Valley Medical Center in 1968 as an LPN. In those days, she worked all areas of the hospital, Emergency Department, Obstetrics, MedicalSurgical, and ICU. She remembers that her starting start-ing wage was $1.29 per hour, and that the old Uintah County Hospital had only 15 beds total. She graduated with her RN in 1981, and accepted the position posi-tion of Emergency Department Head Nurse. She held this position posi-tion for 14 years and in 1985 was named Emergency Medical Services Nurse of the Year for the State of Utah. Virginia became known as "Ma Ve," to the students in the EMT program which she helped to establish. She was also instrumental in beginning begin-ning a health occupations program pro-gram at the high school which later became the Nursing Aide Program. Her ability to teach, nurture, listen and support earned her the admiration and respect of her students as well as the physicians phy-sicians and other staff members mem-bers at the hospital. Since stepping down as department head in 1995, Virginia has continued to work in the Emergency Department and has no immediate plan for retirement. "There's truly a reason that all of us at AVMC refer to Virginia as "Ma" stated Mark Holyoak, hospital CCO. "She has not only been instrumental in beginning and growing the various health care programs in the Basin, she also treats all of her patients as she would want her children to be taken care of with high quality care and genuine compassion. I occasionally get the opportunity opportu-nity to work side-by-side with Virginia in the Emergency Department, and I learn something some-thing new from her each time. She is truly deserving of this honor and award. I feel it a privilege to know and be associated asso-ciated with Virginia."
