Jeff Conley goes for the goal against Utes defeat The Steamboat Springs Braves were in Vernal last weekend for another attempt at beating the Uintah Ute hockey team. After suffering a double loss to the Utes in Steamboat the week before, the Braves were set on returning the favor. However, it was not to be. In two games played at Western Park Saturday, the Utes were once again in control of the ice for most of the games, defeating the Braves 3-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the second. In the first period of the first game, the game was played to determine territorial dominance. domi-nance. The Utes were able to make the first mark by scoring with 2:32 remaining in the period peri-od on a goal by Mitch McCarrel. From that point, the Utes were off and running. Goal two in the game was scored by Chad Meinrod with assists by Cajun Laub and Landon Larsen at the 6:20 mark in the second period. McCarrel finished the game by scoring scor-ing the third goal on an assist from Brian Winterton with 2:33 remaining to leave the Utes with a 3-goal shut-out. Despite four penalties called on the Utes, they remained in control of the ice for much of the game. The second game showed some lack of discipline on the part of the Utes with a total of 24 minutes in penalties being called on Ute players. Uintah scored twice in the first period at the 5:32 mark by McCarrel and with 2:36 left in the period peri-od on an unassisted goal by Brian Long. Jeff Conley scored the Utes' final goal in the February 10th, 2005 Corral If RELA1 11 FOR L RELAY LIFE third period with an assist by McCarrel. The Utes' defense came to the forefront once again as they kept pressure on the Braves, holding them to one goal scored in the second period. The Braves were able to outshoot the Utes 25 to 20 for the game, but good defense and a determined effort by goalie Tappan Brown limited their effectiveness. Brown is maintaining main-taining a 95 percent save percentage per-centage for the season. The Utes are now 9-1 in play for the year after suffering a loss to Craig last Tuesday night.
