The 30-foot deep holes will permit round wire forms to hold the bridge supports. When finished, three supports will be used on each end of the south-bound traffic lanes and four supports will be used on each end of the north-bound traffic lanes. Garn McNeil of Wadsworth Bros, says the biggest improvement will be grouted concrete and rip wrap rocks to stabilize the banks. He says part of the work is removing old cars and junk previously thrown into Ashley Creek to help reduce erosion. Both lanes of the bridge are due to be finished in early December. The lights, located at 500 North and 1500 West and at the intersection of 500 North and 2500 West, will help control conges tion caused by Uintah High School surges in traffic. Until the electricity is provided, the lights remain hooded. files application for merger approval On Monday, August 9, 2004, UBTA and UBET Telecom filed a Joint Application with the Public Service Commission of Utah for approval of the merger of UBET Telecom and UBTA with the surviving sur-viving company to be known as UBTA-UBET Communications. The merger was approved by the Board of Directors of UBTA by a unanimous vote and by the members mem-bers of UBTA by a 23 majority at UBTA's Annual Meeting back in April 2004. The target date for the effective date of the merger is December 3 1,2004. The principal reason for the proposed pro-posed merger is to consolidate the operations of the two companies by combining UBET Telecom into UBTA. UBTA will acquire all assets of UBET telecom., UBTA will then provide all telecommunications telecommuni-cations services under its new name, UBTA-UBET Communications. According to Bruce H. Todd, General ManagerCEO, the merger will create more member benefits and will mean improved reliability. reliabil-ity. "Both companies will also be allowed to operate on economies econo-mies of scale. The new, combined entity will be well positioned to provide the same quality services to all telephone subscribers in the Uintah Basin and be able to deliver unmatched services for its members such as our Extended Area Service, which eliminated long distance calling call-ing throughout the Basin." One objective of the merger of UBET Telecom into UBTA is for the subscribers in the UBET Telecom exchanges to be treated in the same manner as those in the UBTA exchanges. Currently, the subscribers of UBET Telecom are not members of the cooperative as are UBTA's subscribers. As such, they do not participate in the patronage patron-age distributions as do the members of UBTA nor do they have any vote in the governance of the cooperative. coopera-tive. With the merger, the subscribers subscrib-ers of UBET Telecom will become members of the cooperative. Mr.. Todd added that, "Since our humble hum-ble beginnings in 1953, UBTA has encouraged unity in our community through a cooperative atmosphere. Since the acquisition of the QWest exchanges in 2001, it has been the overall objective of the UBTA management, employees and board to treat the UBET Telecom districts (Roosevelt, Vernal and Duchesne) in the same manner as the existing exist-ing UBTA exchanges, while at the same time, not adversely impacting the existing UBTA cooperative or its members." UBTA-UBET Communications is looking forward to the merger and is excited to be able to serve the residents of the Uintah Basin better than ever. UBTA-UBET Communications has come a long way, and hopes to be able to meet customer demands for many, many years to come. Officers, do you have legal representation? Manila receives $40,000 grant Manila Town Corporation has received a $40,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Office. This funding will be used to cover additional expenses brought on by unforeseen circumstances such as extreme winter conditions and unmarked water lines throughout the town. Many unanticipated delays occurred in order to conduct sub-surface investigations. Hours of repair, re-connection, and rerouting re-routing were required because the large excavation equipment would break or dig up the unmapped piping. pip-ing. In addition, workers encountered encoun-tered petroleum contaminated oils which contributed to more expense and time needed to correct the hazardous haz-ardous conditions. John R. Cox, Rural Development State Director stated, "The Bush Administration is committed to providing funding for water, wastewater waste-water and solid waste projects to rural communities. Our agency was pleased to provide additional financial support to this community commu-nity in partnership with the State Community Impact Board and the State Drinking Water Board. This funding will assist the town of Manila complete Phase III of their water project. Replacement of the old water lines, meters, and other equipment within the town boundaries bound-aries will provide a needed link to the excellent supply system that brings water into the town. As a result, residents will be supplied with adequate water pressure to meet their needs for fire protection protec-tion and indoor and outdoor use for many years to come." The funding was approved by Rural Development's Rural Utilities Program.
