A message from UINTAH MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT Vernal A total of four Vernal Girls All-Star All-Star teams competed in the West Valley Classic Tournament July 22-24. 22-24. One team per age division represented rep-resented the Vernal Girls League and competed against other Utah and Idaho teams. The All-Stars representing the 12 and under league played two pool games Thursday night, then began early the next morning with regular tournament games. After defeating the Roosevelt All-Stars, the Vernal girls moved on to play Murray Orange in a close game with Vernal coming out ahead 5-4. Vernal then moved on to play the home team of West Valley City, defeating them for a second time with the final score of 6-2. The next match was against Grantsville, which had eliminated eliminat-ed the other Vernal 12 and under Crushers traveling team. The All-Stars All-Stars pulled off an exciting victory over Grantsville at 4-1. The team was lead by A J. Bjornson, Ph.D. Express Sports Writer On August 6th the Uintah Recreation District, as part of its commitment to youth health and fitness, fit-ness, sponsored an "Out and About Kid Trip" to the Rangely, Colo. Recreation Center. What they lacked in numbers, they more than made up for in fun. The fortunate few on the fitness trip to Rangely were Brandi Worthen, Olivia Pophom, Tara Trotter, and brothers If t I'M' 4 W , 'I ; . Vernal's Frank Annerl shows the steady hand and focus that earned him first place in the recent World Horse Shoe Tournament. Vernal man sweeps World Horse Shoe Tournament Frank Annerl swept the seniors division at the recent 2004 World Horse Shoe tournament held in Pocatello, Idaho. Annerl was part of a field of 1200 competitors from the United States, Canada and several other countries coun-tries that gathered July 26 through August 7. The Vernal horse shoe enthusiast took first place in the seniors division divi-sion of 287 men. He has pitched in eight world tournaments and this is the first time that he has placed first. The Vernal horseshoe pitcher had previously competed in World tournaments tour-naments in Spearfish, South Dakota, 1989 and 1993; Biloxie,Miss.,1991; Gilette, Wy., 1992; Ainsworth, Youth flag football registration begins The Uintah Recreation District is currently taking registration for flag football for youth in grades 2nd - 6th. This program is a way to introduce youth to the basics of football. Registration is $25 if you register before Aug. 20. After Aug. 20 the fee is $30. The registration deadline is Sept. 3. The kids learned about the value of physical fitness and what fitness fit-ness centers provide, while touring tour-ing the Rangely facility. They each enjoyed basketball games such as "horse" and "lightning", in addition to racquetball, ping-pong, and billiards. bil-liards. Water fun included the biggest big-gest splash contest off the diving board and water volleyball. All the participants got to enjoy popsicles to cool off after their activities. The road trip to and from Rangely Neb., 1998; Bismark, N.D., 2000; Red Deer, Canada, 2002. Previously he has competed in major tournaments in Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska. Anneri's passion for the sport began in 1987 when he was passing pass-ing through Mesquite, Nevada and he was talked into participating in a tournament. He now belongs to both the Horse Shoe Pitching Association of Northern Utah and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association. The Vernal sportsman plans to participate in the World Tournament in Bakersfield, Cal., next year. County Fair activities The Uintah Recreation District is gearing up for the Uintah County Fair. This Saturday is the free movie that starts at dark at the Kiwanis Park located behind the library. Tuesday, August 17 is the free skate exhibition at 6:30 p.m. at the Vernal City Skate Park. On Wednesday, August 18 at 6:30 pjn. will be the 3 on 3 basketball tournament tourna-ment for all ages at the Basin Sports parking lot. Register your team for 3 on 3 basketball for only $35. This type of outing is an excellent way to introduce children to healthy recreation activities in a fun, safe, and structured setting. If your kids have not previously had a chance to attend one of the Uintah Recreation District kid trips or other youth fitness fit-ness programs, give it a try, it is well worth it.
