Long gave the history of William "BJT Reruns Historical Society has near record turnout The Historical Society met on (XI 12 to hear George Long give the history of William "Bill" kkhins and his family. A near record audience of over 40 individuals individ-uals were present at the Golden Age Center to hear about Rkhins and his family. Kkhins was bom in Vernal in 1921 and survived the Depression years with the hard work of his parents par-ents who grew their own vegetables and raised their own livestock, hay and grain Iter he woiked for Ck-orge Davis on Diamond Mountain herding sheep. He also worked for the CC'C Ctirps in Provo for six months, put in some time as a gandy dancer for the railroad He mined rock in Totiele and herded sheep in the Bailies before being called into military serske. Kichins became a paratrooper and spent his World War II service time in the South Pacific. He was on CiMTegidor when General Douglas Mi Arthur made his return following follow-ing his famous "I shall return" speech. There Kichins was part of the combal learn that won one of ilk- hardest fought battles in military mili-tary history. While serving in the Philippines, Richins contracted "jungle rot" which caused him to lose part of his hearing. Sometime during his South Pacific service he was also infected with malaria. Once discharged and back home, Kichins worked sacking and then digging gilsonile. His refusal lo work with explosives at the gilsonile mine saved his life when eight men were killed in 1953, his younger brother among ihem. Soon after Richins quit the mine. Tragedy struck Rkhins again when his wife, Velma, died of cancer, leav ing him alone w ith their young daughter. Rkhins married Maurine Corless Chapman, a twice widowed woman with a child. Together they had three children. Richins went to work for the Park Servke at Dinosaur Park, where he stayed for over 17 years. He also built houses with Loris Wooley. including one on three acres of his parent's farm for himself and his family. After retiring from the Park Service, Richins was water master for 12 years before retiring al the age of 80. He and his wife, Maurine, celebrated their 5(Hh wedding wed-ding anniversary this year. Bill Richins served his country as a paratrooper during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He suffered jungle rot and malaria as a result. Do you have boxes of photos sitting around?
