National award earned by local horses Mother and daughter team, Dawn's Misty Dreamer and Dry Misty Glo, brought back the National Champion Team Penning Award after an outstanding performance perfor-mance during the National Foundation Quarter Horse Show held in Farmington August 30 through Sept. 3. This w as their fifth national show. The mares, owned by Don and Ilene Fedelleck of Jensen, were ridden rid-den by Ilene Fedelleck and Brett Sabey. Farmington. Along with teammate Vickie Alcorn, Syracuse, the team captured the National title with a time' of 44 seconds. Dawns Misty Dreamer also placed 3rd in the Open Cow Work class. Utah riders and foundation horses have consistently ranked among the top National Foundation Quarter Horse Association participants partici-pants in the nation. The outstanding efforts of these athletes have recently been recognized with the organization of a NFQHA state club. "We are excited about having a club here in Utah so that other foundation quarter horse owners can have the opportunity to show their horses," says Ilene Fedelleck. "As of Jan. 1, 2001 all NFQHA sanctioned shows by all NFQHAS clubs will have points go toward year-end awards." Record number of turkey permits approved When the Utah Wildlife Board closed their meeting on Oct. 11, they did so after setting a record number of wild turkey hunting permits per-mits for Utah. During the spring of 2001, their decision means that 252 additional people will have a chance to enjoy w ild turkey hunting in the state. Statewide, Utah will provide 1,114 wild turkey hunting permits; 654 Rio Grande permits and 460 Merriam's permits. The increases are 207 more Rio Grande permits than offered in 2000 and 45 more Merriam's permits. Applications for the wild turkey permit drawing will be available beginning Dec. 1. The hunting seasons will be in April and May. "Over the past 12 months, I'm proud to say Utah has set the one year, combined record for the most wild turkeys moved within a state. Openings on volleyball league The Uintah Recreation District has a few more openings for its 3 on 3 volleyball league. This league is open to men and women 16 years and over with teams being made up of any combination combi-nation of male and female players. Games will be played on Tuesday evenings at the Vernal Middle School gym. Registration cost is $75 per team. There will be a limited number of teams and will be taken on a first come basis. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 1 8 at 5 p.m. with play beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 24. To register come by the Recreation Office, 1 34 West Main, Suite 101, or call 781-0982. Jr. Jazz registration continues Uintah Recreation District registration regis-tration of Jr. Jazz Basketball continues contin-ues this week. Grades 3rd and 4th, coed and 5th grade boys sign-ups are Oct 6 through Nov. 1. Play begins in November. Grades 6th, 7th and 8th boys and 5th, 6lh, 7th and 8th grade girls may sign up Oct. 6 through Nov. 22. Play begins in January. Ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th grade boys sign-ups are Oct. 6 and Nov. 22. Play begins in Jan. Grades 3rd through 8th cost is $25 per player. Grades 9th through 12th cost is $150 per team. Players must sign up as a team for 9th -12th grade. The two varieties of turkeys that are being managed in Utah generally occupy and are adapted to different habitat types. The Rio Grande variety is more adapted to river bottom bot-tom woodlands in close association with agricultural land types. While some Merriam's turkeys have been introduced into the Uintah Basin, most of the turkeys released and established here are the Rio Grande variety.
