What is a cataract? Kathy Searle came up with a little pamphlet from the American Optometric Association that provided pro-vided the answers and explanations. It explained that when the normally clear lens within the eye becomes cloudy and opaque, it is a cataract They vary from extremely small areas ar-eas of cloudiness to large opaque areas that cause a noticeable loss of vision. Cataracts are most often found in people over the age of 55 but can be found in younger people, including includ-ing newborns. It really isn't know what causes cataracts but it is known that a chemical change in the eye causes the lens to become cloudy. Age, heredity, an injury or a disease are factors, also, excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation as in the sun, the use of certain medications medi-cations or cigarette smoking. Currently there is no proven method to prevent them from forming. form-ing. Although there is no pain involved in-volved when cataracts form there are other indications such as hazy vision, the appearance of spots in front of the eyes, or the feeling of having a film over the eyes. A temporary tem-porary improvement in near vision may also occur and increased sensitivity sensi-tivity to glare, especially at night may be experienced. A comprehensive eye exam by a doctor of optometry can determine if a cataract is forming. If a cataract develops to a point that daily activities activi-ties are affected an eye surgeon may recommend surgical removal of the cataract The surgery is relatively rela-tively uncomplicated and has a success suc-cess rate of at least 95 percent A patient, along with the doctor, will decide on the type of post-cataract post-cataract vision correction that will be used. Intraocular lens implants, inserted in the eye at the time of surgery, serve as a "new lens" and are the most frequent form of visual correction. In some cases, however. eyeglasses or contact lenses may al- so be needed to provide the most ..-9 . , ... euecuve posi-caiaraci vision . . How to survive a heart attack when alone by Joy Patterson, RN Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, the following article is in order. Without help the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims vic-tims can help themselves by coughing cough-ing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before be-fore each cough and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, ar-rives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Don't take foot problems to school Many foot problems in children are not discovered until they start to walk, and unfortunately, parents are often advised to simply "keep an eye" on the problem. In other cases, supportive type shoes are recommended. recom-mended. Although, special shoes can be helpful in maintaining correction, cor-rection, or as an addition to other treatment they should not be substituted sub-stituted for proper treatment The longer the child goes without proper prop-er treatment the more difficult the treatment becomes. You can "keep an eye" on your child's foot problem prob-lem until only a surgical procedure can correct it Treatment of a child's foot should not be left to the shoe salesmen. Dr. Gary Green, podiatrist, foot specialist and surgeon said that in most cases, growing pains are not related to growing at all, but muscles mus-cles complaining due to stress and strain caused by abnormal foot imbalances im-balances and motion. These growing grow-ing pains can often be helped or lessened by having your child wear orthotic devices in his shoes to relieve re-lieve the stress and strain being placed on the muscles in the legs. The orthotic devices are made specifically for child's foot and are more than just an arch support t For more information on growing pains call Dr. Gary Green, 789-5500.
