Stamp out Oct. 27 through 31 has been designated, des-ignated, "Stamp Out Measles Week" by the TriCounty Health Department. Measles is an acute viral infectious infec-tious disease that is still attacking thousands of infants, toddlers, children chil-dren and young adults worldwide due to lack of immunization or immunization im-munization failure. Many serious complications can result from measles infection such as hearing loss, seizures, Pneumonia, Encephalitis, and death. TriCounty Health Department (TCHD) estimates esti-mates that approximately 3,000 children in Uintah County may be at risk of infection. TriCounty Health officials now recommend two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine vac-cine to protect children from measles infection. The purpose of the second dose is to insure protection protec-tion from infection that may not have been accomplished during the first dose due to immunization failure. fail-ure. Because second doses were not administered during school mandated mandat-ed immunization schedules until 1992, your children may be at risk for infection. Children who started school prior to 1992 were not given the second MMR at the time of their school entry immunization visit. According to TCHD staff, children in the sixth grade and up have not had this second MMR dose. The risk associated with this large number of school age children has prompted TCHD to declare Oct. 27 through 31 to be "Stamp Out Measles Week" (SOMW). For parent's convenience TCHD will carry out school based immunizations immu-nizations at Uintah High School during the week of Oct. 27 through 31. Parents arc urged to consent to their children receiving this vaccine. vac-cine. If there is only one, they should bring their children to the Vernal TCHD office for a second MMR shot. Infants and preschool children who are behind on their immunizations are also at risk for measles infection infec-tion because the first MMR is not administered until 12 months of age. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., until 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Second MMR's are crucial in the prevention of an outbreak of measles. This can happen among school-aged children in high vaccinated vacci-nated populations. In Utah's 1996 outbreaks, over 45 percent of cases occurred in persons who received one vaccine dose on or after their first birthday. The reason was not because of changes in the virus but because of the person's lack of response re-sponse to the vaccine. A second measles (MMR) vaccine vac-cine is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to guard against measles infection to those who did not adequately respond to the first shot. The purpose of the second dose is to produce measles immunity immuni-ty in persons who failed to respond to the first dose. Studies in several age groups indicate that greater than 90 percent of persons who fail to respond to the first dose will respond re-spond to the second. TriCounty Health Department offers of-fers the MMR vaccine during clinic hours Monday through Saturday. There is a minimal fee for this service ser-vice that can be waived upon request. re-quest.
