Show 12 Vernal Express Wednesday, Noven-ber 16, 1994 Lions Club makes Vernal brighter at Christmas To Your Health News from by Clara Robinson 784-3463 Adopt friend, relative for GAS by Gloria Johnson It is that time of year again. Time for the American Cancer Society's 18th Annual Great American Smokeout. Encourage friends and family to go as long as they can without tobacco this day. This includes in-cludes people who use smokeless tobacco. The goal is to go 24-hours on November 17 without tobacco. If they can make it that far, they are well on their way to quitting for good. But one step at a time. Let's get them to give it a try first This is meant to be a time of light-hearted light-hearted fun. Preaching and scolding are taboo. People "adopting" tobacco tobac-co users for the day should offer moral support, encouragement and incentives to help them get through the day, and hopefully longer. Some ways you can show your support for a tobacco user trying to go tobacco free for this day include: showing that you care, that you have a vested interest in keeping your adoptee in good health. Tell them you love them and want them around for a long time. Provide him or her with a survival kit of low-calorie low-calorie nibbles carrots, celery, sticks of cinnamon, sugarless gum, etc. Encourage them to drink lots of liquids. Water, herbal teas, fruit juices and caffeine-free soft drinks all will work. Pass up on coffee, caffcinatcd soft drinks and alcohol, as they can increase the urge to smoke. Try to make yourself available, either ei-ther in person or by phone, for the entire day. Take your adoptee to breakfast or lunch. Or promise a special dinner at his or her favorite restaurant Go public with your adoption. Enlist the help of others in giving moral support to your adoptee. Consider giving up something some-thing for the day, in support: coffee, candy, soda. Schedule an evening activity that minimizes the temptation tempta-tion to smoke. See a movie in a theater, the-ater, go swimming, or go to the library. li-brary. People trying to quit tobacco need to keep their hands and minds busy with tasks and ideas other than smoking. Do what you can to help distract them and to ofTcr them support. sup-port. Remember, don't nag or threaten. Gently Id them know you love ihcm, and they can do it If they nuke it the ftra 24-hours, stkk with litem for the next 24 hours. Urge ihcm to continue lo stay off. or to try apain, and not to give up hope. People don't have to suy conned iih the ball and chain of tobacco. It jut bkci lime and determination. With your support, some may be able to finally kkk the tobacco company addiction. The Vernal Lions Club recently completed their annual project decorating dec-orating the trees along Main Street for the upcoming Christmas season. They will soon gather at the Utah Field House of Natural History Museum to take turns at babysitting the Dinosaur Gardens during the holidays. In addition, Christmas eve morning the Lions will deliver Christmas baskets to the needy.
