Show 20 Vernal Express Wednesday, October 5, 1994 Volleyball team finally gets it right in victory over Pioneers by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The Lady Ute volleyball team went into last weeks triple header (three consecutive days with games) atop the region race and looking good for a run on state. By weeks end, the team found itself scratching their heads and wondering what happened after dropping two of the three matches. But after a few insightful in-sightful adjustments, the team rebounded re-bounded with a convincing 15-12, 15-4 victory over the Lady Pioneers from Lehi Tuesday, Oct. 4. "We started out pretty good at South Summit," head coach Doris Salazar said, "but both Emery and Union exposed some weaknesses which we have to address." The team defeated South Summit 4-15, 154, 15-3, but then dropped consecutive con-secutive straight set losses to Emery Wednesday night 9-15, 11-15 and Union Thursday night 8-15, 10-15. "I'll have to take part of the blame. We have been using a defensive defen-sive rotation which left us vulnerable vulnera-ble in the middle," Salazar explained, ex-plained, "and the good teams were picking up on it and really taking advantage of the hole. But the team has to take some of the responsibility responsibili-ty also. We haven't been firing on all cylinders lately and in a team sport, that's deadly. The girls all have to be on the same channel at all times to be competitive." Both the Emery and Union matches match-es bore that fact out. At times the team would appear to be ready for a run of points, after creating several side-out opportunities, only to break down and end up allowing their opponents op-ponents several points in a row. 'The most frustrating aspect of it was we were giving up easy points. Our opponents weren't doing anything any-thing spectacular, we just weren't competing as hard as we are capable." capa-ble." In an effort to get her team back on track, Coach Salazar 'tinkered' a bit with her rotations against Lehi. The coach switched her defensive rotation to what is known as a 6-2 with a man-up in which a back line player moves up to cover the middle. Salazar tried a few new rotations ro-tations of personnel to find a winning win-ning combination of players who complemented each other's styles. Coach Salazar had the opportunity to test her adjustments under fire Tuesday when the team hosted 2-3 Lehi, who was pressing the Lady Utes 3-2 record for 3rd place in the standings. "We had to try something," some-thing," Salazar said, "we just weren't in sync." Obviously, the adjustments ad-justments worked as the team pulled out a tough 15-12 first game win after trailing and then taking the victory after several side-outs at 12 all. "The biggest adjustment was to get Shauni Boren's serve back into in-to the lineup. We put her and Dea Madsen folowing each other with great results." Boren served 6 straight points during one stretch of the match Tuesday night. With the victory, the Lady Utes got back into the win column in region re-gion competition and may have established es-tablished a little momentum heading head-ing into their last two matches next week against Wasatch and Park City. Region 10 qualifies three teams for state competition. Right now the team sits in 3rd with a 4-2 record behind Wasatch and Union with identical 5-1 records. ft JW n r m i. T y J L : 'i i ... .. .
