Last June, County Commissioners approved a tax rate of .002792 which was based on an assessed value for Uintah of $1,281,328,191 which was lowered $40 million for appeals of property assessed by the State of Lah. "When the Utah Tax Commission set the county's tax rate last June, it included the $40 million for state assessed appeals," said Commissioner Max Adams. The $40 million represents the three-year average of property appealed by oil, gas and power producers pro-ducers in Uintah County. Last month, the Utah State Tax Commission ordered that deductions deduc-tions could not be taken for state appeals, and the $40 million was added back into Uintah County's assessed value. County ClerkAuditor Pat McNeill said the State Tax Commission did not bother to notify noti-fy the county of the new rate until it was reported on television and the county clerk inquired about it. The 1994 centrally assess appeals will have to be paid from the General Fund surplus, which is rapidly depleting. Commissioner Adams said the appeals are not expected to be as high next year, but of the new methodology set up the by the tax commission assessing taxes on oil and gas companies. "It is now similar to a tax return with figures provided by the company, com-pany, which are not verified unless there is an audit," Adams said. Under the new methodology, the value of Chevron properties in Uintah County decreased by a third.
