Now construction activity is focusing on the northside of the dam where construction and draining the reservoir caused a slip on the right abutment. "Repair of the crack should be complete by Thanksgiving," said Barry D. Wirth, public relations for the Bureau of Reclamation. David Rasmussen, Uintah Water Conservancy District, said the repair of the dam is essential so storage of winter water can begin Dec. 1. Last month the reservoir was drained to the dead pool so that the work to earthquake proof the dam could be completed. The dead pool is the lowest point at which water can pass through the outlet works. The reservoir is essential to irrigators irriga-tors late in the season. "Most farmers in the valley did all right this year," said Rasmussen. "Most were able to get two cuttings of hay." By draining high mountain reservoirs reser-voirs and pumping water from Red Fleet to Ashley Creek, irrigators were able to avoid a disastrous year. Construction this week focused on developing access to the north side of the dam and development of a material processing site. The contractor con-tractor is now extracting materia from the east side of 1500 West at about 2200 North. Trucks will continue con-tinue to make hauls on 1500 West and 3300 North to access the construction con-struction site. The costs of the repairs to the dam and repair of the county roads will oe inciuaed in tncuj minion tne Bureau of Reclamation and local entities have set aside for the project pro-ject The Bureau of Reclamation also has agreed to pay up to $40,000 in pumping cost of Red Fleet Reservoir. Although the cause of the 300 foot long crack on the north side of the dam is not known for certain, Rasmussen said he believes it was precipitated by the construction. "For 30 years we had no problems with the dam, and then they begin to thump on it and wo have problems," prob-lems," he Mid. And it's the one that's going to take the longest to complete. According to Tom Recce, local UDOT office manager, roadwork won't be finished until Nov. I, and final signage not until next spring. Not only is the highway being widened, but a number or sec-oodary sec-oodary roads joining the highway are being reconstructed to meet new federal safety standards. Roads entering highways are to do so at 90 degree angles to provide driven a average. At least Uintah County Commissioners would like to think so, as Tuesday they opened purchasing to the public for 60 surplus windows. Three weeks ago, Uintah County began advertising for bids on the windows that were taken out of the south side of the Uintah County-Utah County-Utah State building. About 90 windows win-dows were removed, but there was 30 percent mortality during the removal, said Jim Shewell county building and grounds supervisor. When the five bids for the surplus sur-plus windows were opened last week, the highest bidder was Anita Nokes at $20 per window for 14 windows. County purchasing agent Dale Cameron, Tuesday recommended that the windows be sold to Nokes for $20 and opening the purchasing of the other windows to bidders for the same price. If there are still windows left, anyone in Uintah County can purchase the aluminum framed windows for $20. "The windows are worth $200 when they were installed," said Cameron. See Windows on page 2 contract, but the Uinuh County Special Transportation District is paying the bill, raving of the road will begin by Fall if the weather holds.
