Show 18 Vernal Express Wednesday, August 3, 1994 Dinosaur TnatifalocD returns this Saturday by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The 12th Annual Vernal Dinosaur Triathlon will take place this Saturday, August 6 with more divisions divi-sions and hopefully more participants partici-pants than ever before. "We are ahead of last year's pre-registration pre-registration by close to 50 percent," co-race organizer Marty Fallon stated. stat-ed. "We are anticipating somewhere between 80 to 100 competitors. Friday is usually the day most teams and local individuals register and we already have 40 registered." Fallon went on to say of those 40, seven states are represented including includ-ing Washington D.C. The popular event has grown in it's 12 years to a point where it was recognized by the Triathlcte Magazine this year as one of the top 50 scenic courses in the United States, and Fallon sees no reason why the event shouldn't continue that growth and spreading recognition. recogni-tion. "Since I have been in the community commu-nity and involved with the event, it has grown in divisions offered, organization, or-ganization, number of participants and national recognition. We have such a beautiful area with no worries wor-ries about course hazards or any of the other 'conditions' which you might find in a big city, it sells itself." it-self." The winning teams will be able to donate the money to the high school program of their choice. 'The idea," Fallon explained, "is to encourage greater participation from area high school-age kids and at the same time possibly introduce a whole new avenue of recreational opportunities." opportu-nities." Other team divisions include Men, Women, Mixed, Masters (40 and over) and Public ServiceCorporate. Individual divisions divi-sions include: 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over in both men and women. This year's course should be very close to last year's, although there could be last minute changes due to the condition of Steinaker Reservoir in the swim leg and road conditions in the bike leg. The course includes a 1 mile swim at Steinaker (swim caps arc mandatory and will be provided pro-vided in the packets), 25 mile bike (helmets required) from Steinaker down Hwy. 191 to 500 North, out to the gravel pits and back to the baseball base-ball complex where a 6.2 mile run begins and ends.
