Band students receive state ratings for efforts The Junior High Eighth Grade Honor Band went to a competition at Snow College in Ephraim last week and, according to their director, direc-tor, John Priest, did extremely well. Two of the judges awarded the band very good ratings and one of the judges awarded the band a "superior." "su-perior." This was the first time any of the students were involved in competition. "I think it was a real feather in our cap to compete so effectively with only eighth graders. Our Junior High music program is on a roll and this is the second year in a row that the eighth grade group received a 'superior at competition," Priest said. In addition to the tremendous performance per-formance from the Honor Band, four high school band students received re-ceived high ratings as soloists at the State Solo and Ensemble competition competi-tion in Provo. Laura Kellersberger, a sophomore at Uintah High School, has been playing violin for as many years as she can remember. Kellersberger currently studies with Suzanne Brimhall in Salt Lake City and performs per-forms regularly with a local fiddle group called, "The Rocky Mountain Rascals." She plays the violin in the Uintah Basin Symphony Orchestra and is a percussionist with the Uintah High School Honor Band. Kellersberger received an excellent excel-lent rating for her performance on the violin.and a superior rating for her performance on a marimba duet with Aleisha Wood. Aleisha Wood has been involved in music most of her life. She has made innumerable contributions to the music department for many years. His solo will be played on the marimba. Famsworth performed on the marimba at the State Solo and Ensemble competition and received a "superior" for his performance. He is also the drummer for the Uintah High Jazz Band, section leader for the UHS drum line and recording engineer for the UHS music mu-sic department. He also received a "superior" for his drumming at the State Jazz Band Competition and was awarded "Most Outstanding Rhythm Section" at Region VII Jazz Band competition in Lehi. Blake Stevens, a senior at UHS, is the recipient of numerous awards during an extremely competitive season. Stevens is a student of Eleanor Marshall and performs regularly at piano recitals and various musical events in the Basin, as well as abroad. Aside from playing the piano, pi-ano, he plays the viola in the Uintah Basin Symphony Orchestra. He also will be soloing with the Symphony this week at the spring concert performing per-forming the first movement of the Mozart Piano Concerto 20 K466. The Uintah Basin Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Priest, is a community orchestra with 40 members ranging from youth to adult. They will be presenting pre-senting a variety of classical music during Friday's concert. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Vernal Middle School Auditorium. There is a charge of $2 per person at the door. o o BRENDA LEE VIGIL is the 'lop cookie seller" in Vernal for this year's Girl Scout Cookie Campaign. Vigil earns 'top seller' in Girl Scouting Brenda Lee Vigil received "Top Service Unit Seller" of the Vernal unit at the Super Seller Banquet on Saturday, May 8 in Salt Lake City. She sold a total of 867 boxes of Girl Scout cookies during the recent cookie campaign this spring. This is the second year in a row Vigil has received the honor. She said her best selling cookies were "Samoas and Thin Mints," the favorites fa-vorites among customers. Brenda is the daughter of Henry and Mary Vigil of Naples. She is a member of the St. James Catholic Church and Girl Scout Troop 1136 under the leadership of Donna Christiansen. She loves attending Naples Elementary and enjoys Girl Scouting, dancing, bike riding and listening to country-western music. LDS Seminary graduations announced The Vernal Senior Seminary-Graduation Seminary-Graduation will be held on Sunday, May 16 at the Ashley Stake Center. This year two sessions will be conducted due to the largest graduating gradu-ating class ever of approximately 180 graduating seniors. The first session will be at 5 p.m. with the Maeser, Ashley and Roosevelt Stakes. The next session will be at 7:30 p.m. and will include the Uintah and Glines Stakes. The student speaker will include Howard Cleavinger, Tim Gibbons, Ruth Rust, Liz Hadlock and Chris Manwaring. The public is welcome to attend. The highlight of the evening was the installation of next year's officers. In addition to the installation, the Exemplar Degree Ritual was given to Donna Burchinal. Club meeting Dave Olson will present a program pro-gram on nature photography during this months meeting of the Uintah Mountain Club. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13 in the AVMC Conference Center in Vernal. Olson will discuss exposure, expo-sure, lighting, film characteristics, subjects and the use of equipment These topics will be presented with a 35mm slide show highlighting highlight-ing natural areas of western North America and will include a demonstration demon-stration of various types of equipment equip-ment Emphasis will be placed on the role of individual perception in photography. The second part of this seminar will take place on Saturday, May 15 when Olson will host a hands-on demonstration in a beautiful slick-roy slick-roy canyon system. Participants should bring a camera and film, a daypack, food and water to the fish hatchery at Jones Hole. "TV1 Darcey Olsen Olsen named to CEU cheer squad " Darcey Olsen, a graduating senior of Uintah High School, has been chosen to be a member of the 1993-1994 1993-1994 College of Eastern Utah cheer squad. The selection was made May 8 at CEU in Price from among 30 other girls of area high schools. She will receive a full tuition scholarship and plans to go into secondary education. educa-tion. Olsen has served two years on the Varsity cheerleading squad at Uintah High School and was this year's head cheerleader. She has also al-so been a member of the USH Executive Council and the manager of the USH Boy's Baseball team for two years. She is the daughter of Dave and Linda Olsen of Vernal.
