Antique tractor finds final resting place at Western Park by George E. Long Recently an early vintage tractor was presented to the Western Park's Heritage Museum by local residents Garth Horrocks and George Long. The tractor has been added to the museum's collection for public viewing. Around the year 1928, this tractor along with five others like it, was brought into Vernal by way of the Uintah Railway, and they were purchased pur-chased by local farmers. This particular partic-ular tractor was bought by T.G. Alexander and put to work on his ranch in Dry Fork Canyon. According to Ward Murray of Brush Creek, others purchasing machines were the Merrill and Manwaring families, the Stewarts of Jensen, the Dodds and O. L. Jacobsen. Murray is an enthusiastic tractor and old lime farm machinery fan and owns the last remaining one of the origi-. nal tractors. His tractor is suTl being used from time tp tjmc on his acuve Brush Creek 'ranch. The tractor Murray has, he said, was the original origi-nal tractor purchased by the Dodds. Most of his sons learned the art of driving it, and what an art that was. The steering wheel required both hands on it at all times. One thing though, it did build strong muscles in their hands and arms. A son, George Slaugh, told how as a young boy he drove the tractor from Dry Fork after they purchased it, to their farm in Davis Ward. It took two days to make the trip and George said he was one tired lad when they finally got the tractor home. Ben Slaugh often used the tractor to power their thrashing machine and George tells of a rather harrowing harrow-ing incident he experienced while making their way up a steep hill with the separator. He said they knew the tractor couldn't hold the separator by itself so an uncle, , Hyrum Slaugh .tied his truck to the, machine with a chain so as to help hold the tractor back. Things went well until the chain broke, leaving George and the tractor to manage the situation. Fortunately for all, they were near the bottom of the hill, but George said he really had a run of things for a few minutes and he was certainly relieved when he got it stopped. Benny Slaugh, as most people called him, along with his wife, was a hard worker and a successful farmer. He believed in keeping up with the times. Farming in those days was of very high priority as well as necessity in Ashley Valley. To many, like the Slaughs, it was their livelihood. Later the tractor was owned by Reese Timothy and this became the property of Garth Horrocks. George Long obtained the machine from Mr. Horrocks with the intentions of MEADOW GOLD HAS A HANDLE ON ORANGE JUICE. And a new 96-ounce container, a resealable top and a freshness seal to help keep it naturally fresh longer. All of which make Meadow Gold 100 Pure Florida Orange Juice 100 convenient. It 3 perhaps getting it restored. This never materialized. It was the wish of both Mr. Horrocks and Mr. Long to some day have it on display in a local museum. With the construction construc-tion of the Western Park, this became be-came a reality. Of the other remaining tractors of the original six mentioned, three are in the Denver and Mildred Long collection, one is owned by Ward Murray, which leaves one unaccounted unac-counted for. These old machines, along with others that followed, played an important im-portant part in Ashley Valley's development. de-velopment. They were used for almost al-most everything imaginable from breaking up brush, such as grease-wood grease-wood and willows, to plowing, ditching, power thrashing machines, pumping water from the Green River and much more. Those first owners were definitely of pioneer spirit to try something new and improved for their operations. opera-tions. This is certainly an important segment of Ashley Valley history. Matthews Vernal church of Christ In order to spur greater Bible reading and study, we will begin to give a Bible test each week as part of this series. We hope all of our readers will take each test fairly and encourage others to do so. The tests will be objective and able to be answered with very few words. This week's Bible test has to do with BIRDS of the Bible. See how many you can identify from the clues given before you read the passage. Ten or more right is an excellent score. 1. These birds sold for a farthing (Matt 10:29). 2. Elijah was fed by these birds while in hiding (1 Kings 17:6). 3. Israel feasted on these birds on leaving Egypt (Ex 16:13). 4. Birds used by Solomon in international trade (1 Kings 10:22). 5. Two birds offered at the presentation of Jesus (Luke 2:24). 6. Holy Spirit descended in the form of this bird (Matt 3:16). 7. This bird said to "know her appointed time'' (Jer 8:7). 8. These birds were to possess desolated Idumea (Isa 34:11). 9. This bird figured in Peter's denial of Jesus (Matt 26:74-75). 10. This bird was sent forth first from Noah's ark (Gen 8:7). 11. This bird was sent forth second from Noah's ark (Gen 8:8). 12. Jeremiah described horses faster than this bird (Jer 4:13). 13. This bird is cruel in the wilderness (Lam 4:3). 14. Jeremiah's heritage was like what great bird (Jer 12:9)? Brother Matthews, If someone accepts the Lord into their life by faith and repentance but dies before being immersed in water (baptized), will that person still be saved? Vernal Ave. 789-3511 way to his own wedding, is he married? If one dies before being sworn in as a new citizen, is he a citizen anyway? All can see that the answers to these questions are NO! And if one is not looking for a loophole to keep from obeying God's clear Word, he can also see that the answer to our querist question is NO! Please read each of the below passages and answer the question following: Mark 16:16 Is one saved before or after baptism? John 3:5 Is one in the kingdom before or after baptism? Roman 6:3 Is one "in Christ" before or after baptism? Acts 22:16 Are sins washed away before or after baptism? The above Scriptures clearly teach that baptism is necessary for salvation (cf. Acts 2:38; 1 Pet 3:21; Gal 3:27). In truth, no one can "accept the Lord into their life" without baptism, for it was the Lord who put baptism into the Gospel and required it of all who would come to Him (Matt 28:18-20). One cannot accept the Lord by faith only, by repentance only, nor by baptism only. All, not just one, of these are required by Christ. Until, one is "born of water and of the Spirit" he is not in the kingdom. Until one is "baptized into Christ" he is not in Christ. Until one "repents and is baptized" his sins are not forgiven. Until one "believes and is baptized" he is not saved. Please, search the Scriptures and see whether these things are so (Acts 17:11). Send all questions or comments to: P.O.
