Scouts remove sediment from guzzler Eagle Scout, Daniel Angus, and fellow scout troop members cleaned out sand and silt which had accumulated accumu-lated in the Upper Shindy WildlifeLivestock Guzzler. A guzzler is a type of reservoir which traps and stores rain and snow run-off. A float valve controls the flow of water out of the reservoir reser-voir as it is used by the animals. Periodically, accumulated silt must be removed so the reservoir can store a maximum amount of water. Daniel and his fellow scouts removed re-moved approximately 6 cubic yards of sand and silL According to Steve Hartmann, BLM Supervisory Range Conservationist and Project Supervisor, "The Shindy Guzzler is 1 t t t - . i of. It is an important mule deer habitat and is also part of a grazing allotment and in a time of water shortages, it is essential es-sential to keep the guzzler at maximum maxi-mum carrying capacity." Mitch Hacking, a local cattle operator, op-erator, was so pleased with the scout project that he donated $150 to the scout troop. According to Ray Tate, BLM District Public Affairs Specialist, "The young men who display the initiative to become Eagle Scouts are very special people. We consid-: er it an honor to be a part of their accomplishments. Erosion control structures are Scout project Mark Stewart, Eagle Scout candidate candi-date of Troop No. 213, recently directed di-rected the efforts of fellow Scouts in the construction of a total of fourteen four-teen erosion control structures. The project was undertaken to satisfy part of the requirements of Eagle Scout rank. Part of the structures were placed in Sweetwater Canyon and part were placed in South Canyon, both located in the Book Cliffs area on lands administered by the Vernal District of the Bureau of Land Management Some structures were made with steel posts and wire and the others made from wood and sagebrush and arc designed to slow down water runoff and to build up soil sediment behind the structures which tends to partially reclaim the eroded sircambed. The Sweetwater Canyon is one of the Vernal District's riparian demonstration areas and this project is only one of dozens of Scout and District projects designed to have a positive effect on the overall riparian ripari-an reclamation. The Vernal District maintains a list of suitable projects which Scows may do to fulfill their Eagle Scout Service Project Outlaw Trail Ballet workshop cancelled The Outlaw Trail Dance workshop work-shop in conjunction with D.il!ci West, which was to be hclJ on July 20 onJ 21, bat been cancelled due to unexpected r-nMcmi iih scheduling.
