Poetry Corner Trimming The Tree The room is filled with pinion smell, The tree is green and tall. It stands in all its majesty, Flat side against the wall. Our children look with star filled eyes At the wonder of the season. The rules are bent and broken now And there seems to be no reason. My second child, a strapping boy, Feet planted on the couch, Is hanging shining Christmas things And Mom is not a grouch. The youngest girl, a child of three, Stands fixed in consternation. She just can't reach the highest branch Despite her concentration. The oldest is a fine young girl, She's quite an organizer. She quickly lines the others out. You see, she is much wiser. And then, there is the middle girl In quiet contemplation, Within herself she sings her songs To quite a congregation. These arc the times of Christmas passed. The years we will remember. Some memories to keep us warm In future, cold Decembers.
