Uv "V , " - i l' .I" ' t: Fifty locals got together for the Outlaw Trail Tennis Tournament, the best turnout ever for a local event, and after five days of play Steve Henderson emerged as the champion of the tough Men's Open Division. The tournament, which has evolved from the Annual Vernal Express Tournament, enjoyed unprecedented un-precedented success as the field was indicative of the emergence of tennis in Vernal since the success suc-cess of the UHS Boy's Program. Enroute to his title, Henderson beat Bob Drollinger 6-0, 6-0; Val Mortcnson 6-0, 6-2,; Shane Bullock (Uintah High Varsity Tennis, and 1st Singles player) 6-2, 6-2; and Bruce Haines 7-5, 6-3. Coming through the consolation bracket was first day loser Taylor Smith to claim the Consolation Trophy. After losing to Tom Sprousc 64, 3-6, 6-2, Smith defeated Juston Mortcnson 6-2, 6-1; Jim Shirley 6-1, 6-2; and Adam Masscy 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to lake the loser bracket win. Tod Tesar wins men's 3.5 division crown In the beginners and intermediate intermedi-ate bracket Tod Tcsar won wiih two straight wins after an opening open-ing round bye. ' - - n !.' r Buckalew State MVP Young's Last weekend Young's Paint of Vernal entered the State USSSA Softball Tournament and came back home with a first place trophy and several individual honors. In the 32 team event the Vernal ten opened with a 12-9 win over Jed Cole Storage from American Fork on Friday. On Saturday they com pleted a three game sweep of bny's Pizza Roxy 15-8, Green Street 15-8, and Z Club of Salt Lake City 11-3, to enter the final round, a best of three against Little Cacscr's izza from Orcm. In addition to the championship trophy, each player received a bat bag, and commemorative t-shirt. The win advances Young's into the Western Rcgionals on Later Day weekend which will be held in Salt Lake City. USSSA will pay the entrance en-trance fee of the stale champion into the region tournament. Cacscr's placed second with the loss to Vernal, and Robbinson's of Richfield finished third in the state meet.
