Show 28 Vernal Exprest Wedwday, Novembf 25, 1987 Champs return to Utes for new wrestling season For the first time since 1982 the Utes have two state champions from the previous year returning to the new season's wrestling team. Randy Smuin and Pat Jenkins won state crowns in 1981 and then return ed to the Utes the next year, 1982. Smuin and Jenkins won titles in 1982 and Jenkins returned in 1983 for his third title in row. Bryan Van Tassell won the 98 pound crow n as a ninth grader and Brian Southam the 132 pound title in 1987 as a. junior. Van Tassell is back as a sophomore at 119 pounds and senior Southam will be at 140 pounds. The championships by Van Tassell and Southam in 1987 are great, but they are old news as the slate is scrubbed clean for the new season and everyone is starting from scratch while getting ready for the number one goal a state championship. champion-ship. Southam whipped his opponent, Wes Kindt with a first round pin in the Utes' annual Wrestle Off Meet, Friday. "I hit him with a fireman move and got the cradle in. I put in the crossface cradle. "We have room to improve im-prove early in the season, but we have the makings of a powerful bunch. We have been looking strong upper body because of our work in the weight room and I feel good about that."
