Turkeys dread it. It's the one time of year they hesitate to stick their necks out! They make a permanent contribution to the holiday. holi-day. Thanksgiving. Bowing our heads to our provider and saying, "Thank you Lord for your complete care," is a better picture of this holiday than an overstuffed bird on a platter. Unfortunately Un-fortunately many across our city will fail to recognize God at all as they whet their appetites. No recognition will be given the Redeemer. Thanksgiving should cause our hearts to ache for them ! Thanksgiving. Two words, thanks and giving. Both should be constant parts of our cosation. I Chronicles 16:34-35 says: "0 give thanks unto the Lord: for he is good; for his mercy mer-cy endureth forever. And say ye, save us, oh God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise." Those who first gathered to celebrate a feast of thanksgiving lifted up praise to God for his goodness, mercy and salvation. "Giving" is found in verses 28-29 of the same chapter. "Give unto the Lord the glory due to his name: bring br-ing an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." The words call us to consider con-sider what we are to give to the Lord. First, glory. We are to glorify the Lord in our lifestyles and attitudes. We are to lift up each other, and the Lord, before a lost world. Second, strength. We ask, "How can I give strength to the Lord?" The only apparent ap-parent way is by giving his sin shat tering message to a world without a way of escape. To share the power of Christ to redeem men is the greatest "strength giving" we can do! In giving thanks we are making an offering to the Lord. That offering is to be of our life's substance. God can only use our possessions to the degree that our life is controlled by him. Allegiance, faithfulness to his word, acceptance of his direction and peace in his provisions are ways we can offer ourselves to God. Only then can we experience real thanksgiving. Only these attitudes allow us to giv4 our life for the occasion ! Cultural Arts Hallie Searle was hostess to the Cultural Arts Club Nov. 18.
