However, Ute crew wastes grand slam in 8 By Aldon RachaU Exprttt Sports Editor The Utes were feeling just grand after the slam over the fence by Larry Wiseman giving the Uintah bunch, a 4-0 lead over one of the top teams in Region 8, Timpview, but the Thunderbirds jolted the Vernal faithful by scoring six runs with two outs in the third inning and posted an 8-6 victory, Friday in Vernal. Uintah had a happy time in the bottom bot-tom of the first inning as Brian Oscarson and Steve Nawahine were walked and Kenny Mohar singled and all three scored on Wiseman's grand slam. The ball hit by Wiseman bounced off a Timpview player's glove when the outfielder tried to capture the flying object, but failed. The Utes had a 4-0 lead going into the top of the third inning, but when the baseball dust had settled the Uintah Uin-tah bunch found themselves on the short end of a 6-4 score. The Utes had runners at first and second, se-cond, but Jonathan LeBeau hit a hard shot right at the center fielder for the third out. Uintah probably felt like kicking themselves when they booted a chance to have leadoff batter Brian Murray at second base with zero outs. Murray singled, but continued down the base path during an error in the outfield. The base running mistake hurt the Utes dearly as a single by Oscarson scored John Silcox, who got on base on a fielder's choice, and put Uintah behind by one run, 7-6. A single by Schulz had advanced Silcox down the base paths. The Utes had runners on second and third, but Mohar struck out to end the inning. An assist was given to the outfield fence on a triple by Reeves. The Timpview batter hit the ball over a Uintah player's head and it hit the bottom of the fence and went on a bouncing journey. By the time the fielder caught up with the ball Reeves was on third base. Reeves scored on a passed ball to put Timpview Timp-view up by two runs, 8-6, in the top of the seventh inning. Uintah hit the ball in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Timpview gloves captured the missiles for outs and won the game by the score of 8-6. Guy and Gary Trowbridge and Pete Jones are former Roosevelt baseball players. Uintah had a 5-0 lead at halftime and added one goal in the second half for a four goal win. Bobby Fritz scored four goals for the Utes and brothers, Theron and George Murphy added one each. G. Murphy had two assists and C.J. Nowak one. Fritz had four shooting attempts and Nowak, T. Murphy and Troy Winter had two. James Rose and G. Murphy had one shot each. "The 6-2 win over Springville was fun. We scored our first goal in the first five minutes of the game. We made three goals in the first 15 minutes. Each half is 40 minutes," stated Ed Browning, Uintah High School soccer coach. "Our attack was just super. We had 12 shots on goal in the first half and made five. We had good shots in games that we lost and they should have been made. We scored once we got close in the game with Springville. We put them right in the hole." "Most teams have their best players on defense and so we had Ricardo Sanchez play defense." The Utes whipped Payson, May 1 by the score of 3-1. T. Murphy scored two goals and Fritz one. V ' t f !M Vernal Big team, Monday, May 4, 3-0. The Ute junior varsity team defeated Payson, 3-0 and the game was tied at 0-0 after one half. Uintah's JV team lost to Springville, 3-1 and Park City, 1-0. Starters for the Utes in the win over Springville were: Don Warner, goalie; Ricardo Sanchez, Sylvester, Eric Morrow, Rose, Nowak, Kurt Fritz, G. Murphy, B. Fritz, T. Murphy Mur-phy and Kevin Owens. The Utes will battle Provo, Wednesday, on the road and will host Carbon, Friday. The win over Springville Spr-ingville put Uintah into contention for one of the spots in the state tournament tourna-ment from Region 8. Uintah's shot at winning three Region 8 matches in a row was destroyed by a 3-2 overtime loss to Pleasant Grove in Vernal, Friday. The Utes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half on a long kick by Bobby Fritz. Pleasant Grove tied up the contest con-test at 1-1, but Uintah's Fritz scored another goal to give the Utes a 2-1 lead. However, the Vikings rallied back for a 2-2 tie when they scored with seven minutes left in the second half. Pleasant Grove scored the winning win-ning goal in the first overtime period. "We had a few shots in the overtime. over-time. We were tough the whole game, but we lost 3-2," said Browning. B. Fritz had four shots on goal and T. Murphy had three. Nowak and K. Fritz had two. Sanchez, Sylvester, Morrow, Phil Hatch and Brice McNeely had one shot each.
