Vernal student performs Joyette Spiers Huffman, formerly of Vernal, was among 40 Brigham Young . University students who recently returned from a two-week performing tour of Jordan that included shows for the famous Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts. Randy Boothe, artistic director for the performers, said the invitation came from Her Majesty Queen Noor through the United States Embassy in Amman and was one of only three issued to the United states. The Jerash Festival, the largest in. Jordan, was sponsored by His Majesty Majes-ty King Hussein and Queen Noor. It included in-cluded plays, concerts, dancing, poetry recitals, puppet shows, films, and arts and crafts exhibitions in the ancient Roman city. The BYU troupe performed in the south theater, a restored part of the ruins with 32 tiers of seats that accommodate 5,000 people. "As invited guests to the festival, we had police escorts and armed guards everywhere we went," Boothe said. "They wanted to make sure everything was perfectly safe for us and that there would be no unfortunate incidents with the foreigners attending the festival.' Queen Noor attended a complete show and went backstage to shake hands with each of the performers. The King and Queen are familiar with BYU because they invited a Young Ambarradors' group in 1982 to perform per-form for their son's birthday party. For the Jordanian performances, BYU created a show called Curtain Time USA comprised of performers from the Young Ambassadors, the Lamanite Generation, the Dancers' Company and the Ballroom Dance Company. The musical showcase highlighted a century of music and dance in America, including turn-of-the-century medleys, Broadway show tunes and country hoedowns. During the festival the BYU troupe was filmed for Jordan National Television. Televi-sion. A BYU crew also filmed a documentary of the performances. Huffman, a graduate student in dance and a daughter of Owen K. and Claire J.
