The first tennis tournament of the sr. son will brin June 6 and continue through June 15. Competition Is open in men's, women's, double's end junior's divisions. Games will be played In the evenings and Saturday. The first of the clinics sponsored by the citycounty recreation department depart-ment is for golfers and has been set for early June. The adult golf clinic will be offered Sunday June 2 and June 3. Clinics will begin at 6:30 p.m. and are being offered free of charge. The clinics are designed for the beginning adult golfer. The clinics are offered at a cost of $6 for six hours of instruction. Basketball clinics for boys and girls will begin in August. The clinics will be open to anyone In the third through ninth grade. There will be a f 10 charge for participation. Football and wrestling camps have also been scheduled. The wrestling camp will be in June and football camp in August. ( - "f -- -- f , V"" f first - pDace toymey ccowim Orem A's captured first place in the Memorial Weekend Tournament in Vernal, Saturday with an 8-4 triumph over Miller of Price. The Orem A's used only one championship champion-ship game to win the title and had a number of players from Vernal and Roosevelt. The Orem team, which had a number of players on last year's championship team, Young's Construction, Con-struction, snared a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three runs by Alan McDonald, Rick Browning and Kim Peterson. A 4-0 advantage was gained by the Orem A's in the top of the third inning. inn-ing. Browning led off with a triple and scored on a single by Peterson. The Orem team hit into a doubleplay and grounded out. The Price team was blanked in the bottom of the third inning and Orem was shutout in the top of the fourth. Alexander led off with a single, but Ron Edwards hit into a doubleplay. Joe Peterson was walked, but Wes Stahl flied out. Orem increased their lead to five runs at 5-0 with one counter in the top of the fifth inning. McDonald ripped a shot off the pitcher for a single. McDonald's base hit actually hit the pitcher and bounced toward home plate for a single. Browning flied out, but Peterson singled. Gary Lundell singled and scored McDonald. The crew from Price finally gained some runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come within three runs at 5-2. Willie Ellington and Richard Martinez scored for Miller. J. Peterson and Stahl singled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, but Craig Monsen grounded out. The Price crew was shutout in the bottom of the sixth. Three more runs were scored by the Orem A's in the top of the seventh inning for an 8-2. advantage. McDonald drilled a pitch over the fence for a homer and Browning followed with a double. K. Peterson singled in Browning. Alexander reached first base on an error and Peterson scored his team's eighth run. towards ana j. f eterson singled singl-ed to fill up the bases, but the next batter hit into a force out. Miller of Price scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as they lost the title game, 8-4. Rufus Ellington got on base on an er- ror and he scored on a triple by Jim Bowman. A single by W. Ellington drove in Bowman. However, the game ended on two fly ball outs. The Price team advanced into the championship game when it beat the CED Bailers of Vernal by one run in nine innings. Miller placed second and the Bailers nabbed third. A first round win was gained by the fee for participation. The program includes three clinics, use of clubs, awards banquet, and trophies. No green fees will be charged on Tuesday mornings during the program. pro-gram. The program Is open to both boys and girls and will be conducted Tuesdays mornings at 8 a.m. Anyone who is interested in the Junior program pro-gram should contact the golf course.
