Show I surfe hope Stan Allen loves basketball basket-ball because he is going to get plenty of it during the 1983-84 season as he will be coaching Union's girls and boys basketball teams. Allen coached coach-ed the Union girls last year, but he will have two coaching jobs at Union this year. The roughest part of the schedule will come in February. The Union girls will take on North Summit on the road in Coalville, Monday, February 4 and then Allen will have to turn around and coach the boys' team in a game at Emery, Tuesday, February 5. Allen will get a break on Wednesday as Union doesn't have any high school basketball games scheduled, but he will probably watch some ball game on TV or rent a video tape with NBA highlights. The Union girls will host Wasatch, Friday February 7 and the Cougar boys will take on Wasatch in a ball game at Union High School, Friday, February 8. Allen gets a break on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but come Tuesday, February 12 it's a return to the basketball action as the Union girls will battle Carbon in Price. Allen will be coaching three games in a row on November 29, November 30 and December 1 as Union's girls will host North Summit, November 29; boys will host Juab, November 30 and Union's girls will take on Uintah at Union, December 1. Union's Allen will be familiar face to Region 9 opponents this year. Union will battle Emery's girls at Union, January 3 and the next day Union's boys will host Emery, January 4. Union will battle Wasatch's girls on the road, January 15 and the Union boys will take on the Wasps in Heber City, January 18. The Cougars will battle Grantsville in an away game, January 10 and the boys will take on Grantsville, January 11. Another rough week for Allen will be the week of December 10-15 as his girls will battle Richfield, Tuesday, December 11 and Delta, Wednesday, December 12 on the road. There isn't a ball game scheduled for Wednesday, Wednes-day, December 13, but the Union boys will be hosting their annual Cougar Classic Tournament in Roosevelt, Friday and Saturday, December 14-15. Let's hope that Allen loves basketball basket-ball because he is going to have a ton of games this season. Uintah High School's new basketball basket-ball coach Kim Peterson is coaching his third high school in the Uintah Basin and this has to be some kind of record. He coached Altamont High School for a number of years, coached coach-ed Union High School the past two years and is getting ready for the season opener against Mountain Crest, November 30 as the head coach at Uintah High School. When Peterson left Altamont a few years ago the Cougars had games scheduled schedul-ed with Altamont and thus the former coach had to coach against his former players. This year Peterson will be going through the same item again as the former Union coach will be coaching against his former Cougar players at the Cougar Classic Tournament, December 14-15 and in a game against the Union Cougars in Vernal, February 20 as the head coach of the Uintah High School team. The last Region 7 team, which Uintah Uin-tah High School is a member of, bit the dust in the state tournament as West clobbered the American Fork Cavemen by the score of 32-12, Friday. Fri-day. Both teams tied at 30-30 after a number of overtimes in a pre-season game. American Fork jumped out to a 6-0 lead on their opening drive, which used us-ed up seven minutes on the clock and consisted of 16 plays and 80 yards. The touchdown was scored on a one yard dive by Chad Robinson. West kept the ball on the ground on its opening drive. A 51-yard run by Jeff Takanaka, two major penalties on the Cavemen and two-yard touchdown run by Takanaka tied up the game at 6-6. The West crew forced American Fork to punt the ball away and Robert Haslam of West hit Thurman . Hill on a 52 yard scoring play to put the Panthers ahead. On the next series A 31 yard pass to Darryl Barnes set up a ten yard rushing touchdown by Haslam. Haslam found Barnes for a 34 yard score with 30 seconds left in the first half, which made the score 25-6 in favor of West. The Panthers went on to win the game by twenty points. Robinson hit Travis Hansen on an 18-yard American Fork touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Ben Lomond finished in fourth place in its region, but Scots will place first or second in the 3-A state football meet as they beat Pleasant ' Grove, 21-19, Friday to advance into the state title game -against West High School. The Scots beat Jordan and Provo, football powers in the 3-A class, in the first two rounds and then knocked off k another football power Pleasant Grove in the semi-finals. Ben Lomond took advantage of two Viking turnovers in the third quarter and received a big break when a two-point two-point pass completion, which would have tied up the game, was nullified by a holding penalty with 1:30 left and the ensuing two-point try at the 18 failed. West and Ben Lomond will battle for the 3-A crown and Alta and Olym-dus Olym-dus will clash for the 4-A title, but the other championships have been decided decid-ed as Richfield won the 2-A crown on a clost 14-13 win over Grand and South Summit rallied for the 1-A title on a 13-9 win over Kanab, Saturday. Grand scored a touchdown with 28 seconds left in the state title game against Richfield, Saturday and a successful two-point conversion would win the game for the Grand crew and a successful extra point kick would tie the contest for the Red Devils and put the teams into overtime, over-time, but an extra point kick was chosen and it ended in failure as James Leech's kick was wide to the right, which made the final score 14-13 in favor of Richfield. Kanab jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the 1-A state tournament game with South Summit. Kanab scored a safety safe-ty Darin Ott scored a touchdown on a 19 yard run up the middle in the third quarter for a 9-0 lead. Shane Mitchell, South Summit's quarterback, raced 13 yards up the middle for a touchdown for his team and an extra point kick by Chad Freestone cut Kanab's lead to two points at 9-7. A key play was a 35 yard completion to the coach Tom Crittenden's Crit-tenden's son Travis Crittenden. A poor punt snap by Kanab with 3 : 54 left in the game gave South Summit Sum-mit the ball at the Cowboy 11 yard line. Mitchell darted 11 yards for a Wednesdoy, November 21, 1984 Vernal Expressfldvertisef 27 touchdown around the left end and gave his team a 13-9 win over Kanab. The University of Utah scored the first touchdown in the game for a 7-0 lead, but Brigham Young University rallied for a 24-14 triumph, Saturday in Salt Lake City, BYU committed five turnovers, but personal foul penalties hurt the Utes. Molonai Hola scored Utah's first touchdown on a one yard run, which was set up on an interception. intercep-tion. However, BYU came back with a touchdown pass from Robbie Bosco to Adam Haysbert to tie up the game at 7-7. Lee Johnson connected on a field goal with 20 seconds left to give BYU a 10-7 first half lead. Bosco faced a third down and long situation and Glen Kozlowski stole the football from three Ute defenders Reggie Richardson, Mike Jones and Erroll Tucker for a 40 yard completion, comple-tion, Three plays later Bosco hit Kozlowski in the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown pass and a 17-7 BYU lead. An 80 yard touchdown drive by the Utes brought them within three points of the BYU lead in the third quarter. A key play was a 35 yard pass from Mark Stevens to Don Woodward. Stevens fired a 11 yard touchdown pass to Thurman Beard with 1 : 35 to go in the third quarter. Utah recovered a BYU fumble at the Cougar 20 yard line in the fourth quarter, but a personal foul penalty, which involved Erroll Tucker put the ball on the BYU 49 for the Utes. Utah got into field goal range, but a 51 yard field goal attempt by Andre Guardi was long, but wide. Guardi also missed miss-ed a 25 yard field goal earlier in the game. Tucker was whistled for a personal foul for slugging Cougar tight end David Mills and ejected from the game after the Utes recovered a BYU fumble at the 20. BYU put in a 66 yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to grab a ten point lead over Utah. Kelly Smith caught a four yard pass for the final touchdown with 7:26 left in the ball game. Brigham Young University is ranked rank-ed as the number one team in the nation na-tion by KSL-TV sports and Sports Illustrated. Il-lustrated. The Cougars were also selected as the number one team Dy UPI, CBS and USA Today. BYU has won 22 straight games and is the only undefeated team in the nation at 11-0. BYU is the Western Athletic Conference championship.
