Show Wednesdoy, Novembur 21, 1984 Vemal ExpfCSSfl d VOf tjSOf 23' i By Kim Madsen Vice president of Utah Fitness Instructors Association Happy Holidays-Healthy Holidays-Healthy Holidays One thing's for sure, as the holidays come upon us, so do mountains of "things we have to do. I know, I know, Aunt Harriet is coming for Thanksgiving with 25 other cousins and assorted relatives, and you have to rearrange the furniture, go shopping, shopp-ing, bake, clean, wash, mend who has time to keep up their fitness schedule as well? Let me put it to you this way: who can afford not to? Just think back on all the years you let fitness go, because there wasn't room in the holiday schedule. And, of course, come Thanksgiving, Christmas Day dinner, office parties, and New Year's Eve, you just couldn't say no to all those goodies. And now it's Jan. 2, and boy, do you feel guilty! So here come those New Year's resolutions "I am going to lose 10 pounds by March" (or twenty twen-ty or thirty...) Really now, there's got to be a better bet-ter way to begin the New Year, instead of drug out from too much wine, women and song. Maybe it's a matter of redefining the word fun so as to leave out gluttony. Or maybe it's to dig down deep inside and reassess what really is important in our lives and surely ourselves have got to be right at the top of the list somewhere. Just think how wonderful it would be to start a new year without the need to make those "lose weight" resolutions. We certainly don't have to wait for the beginning of a new year to decide to lose (or maintain). Think of those two lost months if we give in to procrastination pro-crastination (or the "I'm too busy" syndrome) . It's time to make the commitment com-mitment now, before the holiday crush is upon you. You will continue your daily walk. You will continue your regular session at your aerobics class. You will continue to lift weights, swim, or whatever it is that you do to keep healthy, happy and fit. It's like we are often taught by our various religious leaders: if you make a decision in advance, when the temptation temp-tation comes, it won't be so hard to resist. Decide now to continue to improve im-prove your fitness level throughout the holidays. Then when there's two feet of new snow in the driveway, and the mercury is reading ten below, you won't be so apt to say, "I think I'll stay home and bake Christmas cookies to-. to-. day (and eat a few dozen along the way ) ." You'll have already fought that battle. You can just rely on the previously made commitment and tell yourself, "I said I was going to do it and I AM!" I always tell my students that this is where having a partner to carpool to class with really comes in handy. Oftentimes we are less likely to let down on a commitment made to others than we would to ourselves. With particularly par-ticularly hard cases, I tell them to find someone who has no other possible ' means of transportation to class then you really are needed! Find a friend and encourage each other through this difficult time. You'll see the benefits in added energy to help you accomplish ac-complish all the extra tasks you've set for yourself this season, along with a happier outlook on things. It won't be so easy to feel neglected and put out this year during your late night ses- ' sions at the sewing machine. You'll have put yourself first, doing , something especially for you. Another trick that might be worth a try to keep your incentive up is buying buy-ing yourself an early Christmas present. pre-sent. Everybody likes to wear a new leotard to aerobics, or maybe a new sweat suit to help keep you warm to and from class. If you've been putting off buying that new pair of special sport shoes, now might be just the time. Or perhaps even more drastic measures need to be taken. Maybe you need a change of scenery, places and people. Maybe it's time to explore a different avenue of fitness. You're into in-to weightlifting? Maybe it's time to try an aerobics class. You're getting burned burn-ed out on aerobics? Maybe it's time to Custom Training now located in the back of Anderson Jewelry 26 W. Main Vernal With $15 FRAME PURCHASE NEEDLEWORK MOUNTED FREE (Good thru Dec. 21) Call us at 789-2222 or stop in Tues.-Sat 10 a.m-5 p.m. 12-1 lunch take up swimming laps, or find a new class for awhile. Anything I mean anything! that will help get you through the holiday doldrums is worth a try. Tie a carrot to the end of your nose if necessary and follow it to the nearest gymnasium or studio. Don't forget, this is a good time to bone up on your back-up systems, too. Suppose you are snowed in, or the car breaks down in the slush, or the kids have the flu and you just can't get out for a day or two. Maybe you need to get a new copy of the latest exercise video, or audio or tape. Try a new celebrity or a different kind of music than you're used to. A word of caution here, though. Most of us are king of the excuses when we exercise at home. The phone is ringing, ring-ing, the dog wants to come in (or go out), the house plants need watering ( funny how they've needed it for days but we only notice in the middle of situps, while flat on our backs). It's time to take the phone off the hook, lock the kids in their rooms or give them valium or something, and get a few moments of time for yourself. Yes, you need to put on your leotards and everything. Exercising in your bathrobe just doesn't inspire our best work. Are you convinced? Are you ready to look at yourself in the mirror (from the rear view if necessary to further convince yourself) and say "I'm going to do it! I will continue to exercise throughout the holidays. I will start the new year without any need for resolutions resolu-tions about fitness!" I'll give you something to think about anyway: this Thursday as you load your plate with all those carbohydrates car-bohydrates and sucrose related complexes if you were exercising regularly you wouldn't have to feel so guilty about a little overindulgence.. overin-dulgence.. .happy Thanksgiving!
